David Banner (born April 11, 1974 in Jackson , Mississippi ; real name Lavell Crump ) is an American rapper , music producer and representative of the "Down South".

Career

Childhood and beginning of career

Banner identified with hip-hop at an early age and began rapping at the age of 12 after receiving various hip-hop records from a cousin. He later got into hip-hop production and then went to Jackson High School . Inspired by Leonardo DiCaprio leaving college to be an actor, Banner also dropped out of school to become a rapper and formed the rap duo Crooked Lettaz . The duo got a contract with Penalty Records . The label also released his debut album Them Firewater Boyz, Vol. 1 , which sold around 10,000 copies. During this time he first achieved fame through a beef with the Wu-Tang Clan . After producing the song Thug Holiday for the rapper Trick Daddy , he got a recording contract with Universal .

2002–2004: breakthrough

In 2003, the single Like A Pimp was released (which was also included on the soundtrack for 2 Fast 2 Furious ) and made it to the top 50 of the singles chart in the USA. The album Mississippi - The Album debuted at number 9 on the Billboard 200 . His breakthrough as a producer came in 2003 with the production of the top 40 single Rubberband Man by rapper TI

Until today: Further successes

Following the release of MTA2: Baptized in Dirty Water , he had his only top 10 single, Play , which is full of sexual innuendo. It was awarded a gold record by the RIAA . He also founded his own label Big Face Entertainment and was also heavily involved in helping the victims of the Hurricane Katrina disaster.

He also appeared at the American Congress and campaigned against racism through the media.

In 2008 the single Get Like Me landed in the American Top 20 and the album The Greatest Story Ever Told entered the Top 10. Guest appearances on the album include Yung Joc , Snoop Dogg , Akon , Lil Wayne and Chris Brown . He was also seen several times in films and series in 2007 and 2008.
