Good Girl Gone Bad (en. For: "A good girl was naughty" ) is Rihanna's third studio album , which was recorded in 2006 and 2007 and released on June 5, 2007 in the USA and on June 8, 2007 in Germany under her label Def Jam Recordings was released.

History of origin

The album was produced under the working title "One". It was recorded between 2006 and 2007 in several studios, including New York City , Los Angeles , Chicago and even in Barbados ' capital Bridgetown . Interestingly, with Good Girl Gone Bad , Rihanna avoids her typical R&B and reggae sound and relies on more fast dance - pop and danceable club and chart hits. In an interview she confirmed that the biggest influence on “Good Girl Gone Bad” is Brandy's Afrodisiac , which she thinks is the album she listens to day and night and is her great inspiration. She admires that every song is great . You can hear the whole album. She also explained that she just thought, “You know what? I have to do an album like this ” .

background

When it was announced, there was wild speculation about the meaning of the title. In an interview with a British radio station, Rihanna took a position for the first time and said: “It shows people that I am now a separate personality, I no longer do everything that people tell me to do. I am no longer the innocent Rihanna. Meanwhile, I take more risks and also take more opportunities. "

In her third album, Rihanna finally breaks away from her "good girl" image, hence the title Good Girl Gone Bad . Proof of this change of image is the music video for Umbrella , which differs greatly from Rihanna's previous videos, as it is much more revealing.

In addition to the normal album, a deluxe edition is also available, it contains a second CD with exclusive dance remixes .

The first live performance of Umbrella in the US was at the MTV Movie Awards 2007. Rihanna confirmed in advance that Good Girl Gone Bad will differ from her first two albums with more faster songs.

From September 2007 to the end of March 2008, Rihanna traveled around the world with her successful "Good Girl Gone Bad Tour". Her very first live DVD was released in June 2008 .

The refrain "mama-say mama-sa ma-ma-coo-sa" in the song Don't Stop the Music originally comes from the Manu Dibango classic Soul Makossa from 1972, which was also used in 1983 by Michael Jackson in his Song Wanna Be Startin 'Somethin' used. In 2007, Rihanna asked Dibango Jackson for permission to sample the passage, but Jackson didn't tell her that he was not the author of the passage. Both Rihanna and Jackson were sued by Dibango for copyright infringement.

United States

The first single Umbrella stormed to number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. This made Umbrella Rihanna's second number one hit after SOS from A Girl Like Me at the top of the US charts. Pon de Replay was only kept off 1 by Mariah Carey's “We Belong Together”. On June 23, 2007, Good Girl Gone Bad rose to position two on the Billboard 200 with 162,000 copies sold. Good Girl Gone Bad sold 419,000 copies here within the first 6 weeks of its release. The album also received mostly positive reviews.

Great Britain

In the UK, Good Girl Gone Bad was sold 53,000 times in launch week. It debuted at the top of the local charts. Umbrella also took the top position in the single charts and holds a record there for 2007: Umbrella was number one for 10 weeks, but could not be number one in the annual charts.

  • In addition, the singer's most successful album to date was in the officially counted album charts for 1363 weeks (as of June 2010)
