composition

Don't Stop the Music is a fast, danceable song with a length of 4:27 minutes. It is held in the key of F sharp minor and has a tempo of 120 beats per minute . Rihanna's pitch ranges from F♯ 3 to A 4 . The song uses the sample "Mama-say, mama-sa, ma-ma-ko-ssa" from Michael Jackson's hit Wanna Be Startin 'Somethin' (1983). The section was again a sample from the song Soul Makossa of Manu Dibango from 1972. In 2009, handed Dibango a lawsuit against Rihanna and Michael Jackson because of sampling his songs without his consent (Dibango had previously Jackson directly for Wanna Be Startin 'Somethin' sued).

criticism

Many critics praised Don't Stop the Music , especially for the diverse influences from techno and house . Kelefa Sanneh of The New York Times said that Rihanna was able to transform a relatively hard techno beat into something exuberant. Tom Breihan from Pitchfork Media says: “Stargate is responsible for the best track on the album, 'Don't Stop the Music', an amazing piece of synth-bass- Euroclub madness, at least until the first half. Then she sampled mamasay-mamasas from Michael Jackson's 'Wanna Be Startin' Somethin 'and manages to transition seamlessly into a strong beat. "Quentin B. Huff of PopMatters says:" The Michael Jackson sampling on' Don't Stop the Music '… inspires the way you shake your bum on the dance floor, especially when you sing' ma ma say, ma ma SAH, ma ma koo SAH 'by Michael Jackson. ”Sal Cinquemani of Slant Magazine compares Don't Stop The Music with the 2006 single SOS (Rescue Me) , which also reminds of Michael Jackson's Wanna Be Startin 'Somethin' .
