composition

Only Girl is an up-tempo dance pop song that contains elements of Eurodance and Hip-Hop . The song contains a “heavy, aggressive hip-hop beat ” that was generated with a synthesizer , while the chorus of the song contains a “danceable club beat”. Rihanna's singing during the song has been described as "erective", "sexual", "erotic" and as a "stronger, more sexual, more successful version" of her 2007 hit Don't Stop the Music .

Rihanna sang the song mostly herself, but a lot of it was reworked with auto-tune .

Music video

Rihanna sings Only Girl on her “ Last Girl on Earth Tour ” in Sydney, Australia in March 2011.

The music video for Only Girl (In the World) was directed by Anthony Mandler . The music video premiered on October 13, 2010 on the Internet. In an interview, Rihanna explained how the music video was made and what it's about: “It was a really, really beautiful shot in those crazy, crazy, crazy places. We shot in landscapes a few hours away from Los Angeles . The music video looks unreal. It looks like a fake, like a picture on a postcard where you can see the beautiful hills ... We had a lot of sunshine these days, so this made the video look even better. But really, the music video shows this great landscape and I am the only person there. "

The music video borrows a lot from the content of the song, which says that Rihanna is the "only girl in the world". Just as the content of the song suggests, Rihanna is the only person featured in the music video, singing and dancing in different environments. Most of the music video shows Rihanna dancing in white beach clothes (a shorter floral mini skirt, brassiere) in front of the red hills of the desert landscape. Other scenes in the music video show Rihanna playing and dancing with brightly colored oversized balloons. Other scenes show Rihanna lolling erotically in the flower floor, as well as scenes in which Rihanna performs sexual dances on a fence.

Tanner Stransky from The Music Mix magazine praised the music video, especially the simple theme and content, it seems “as if Rihanna is speaking directly to you, to the viewer and she is the one and only one who sings and sings in this beautiful landscape dances. This is an effect in which one only focuses on Riri and neglects the surroundings, this effect is reinforced by her erotic and sexual outfits and her fiery red hair. "Joyce Lee of CBS wrote:" Rihanna has finally left her rated R and found a new image with her upbeat and her feminine style. ”Brittany Talarico from OK! praised the change in Rihanna's image “from Rated R , which contains dark themes, to Loud , where she says 'Bye leather, hello flowers!', and Rihanna looks like a red beauty in her music video for the upbeat hit Only Girl (In the World ) off. She left her dominatrix side, took a softer side and left her burning hair down! "Seth Sommerfield from Spin Magazine also praised Rihanna's change of image and explained:" She moved far away from the open sexual rated R- side, to a new one 'Whimsical [and] beautiful' page. "

Live performances

Rihanna sings "Only Girl (In the World)" on her Loud Tour in Minneapolis , Minnesota on June 16, 2011

Rihanna first sang Only Girl on Saturday Night Live on October 30, 2010. Her performance consisted of a medley of What's My Name? and Only Girl (In the World) . What's my name? (excluding Drake ) was also performed for the first time on the same day. The following day, Rihanna sang Only Girl on The X-Factor in the UK, wearing a pink flower dress and on stage was a large table where Rihanna was performing sexual dances with a group of dancers. She also sang the song at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2010 in Madrid on November 7, 2010, where she was surrounded by flowers that resembled a fairy tale. Further appearances followed at the X Factor in Italy on November 9, 2010, where Rihanna wore a bikini dress and a plait wig with flowers and performed the song with erotic dances. On November 10th, Rihanna sang the song at Le Grand Journal in France . A day later on November 11, 2010, Rihanna appeared on The Graham Norton Show in the UK, where she gave an interview and sang Only Girl .

Rihanna sang a medley of Only Girl (In the World) , Love the Way You Lie (Part II) and What's My Name? At the American Music Awards 2010 on November 21, 2010 . . She opened the gig with an a cappella version of Love the Way You Lie (Part II) . She sat on a swing that hung from a tree, on the ground there was a grassy landscape. Stars shimmered on a canvas in the background. Rihanna wore a sheet as a dress. After singing the first excerpts of the song, Rihanna jumped to the floor of the stage. Then fog surrounded the stage and Rihanna quickly changed her clothes and now wore a black and white bra and started What's My Name? to sing. The stage was lit up and various colorful patterns could now be seen on the screen. During the performance, background dancers came on stage and performed erotic-sexual suggestive dances with Rihanna. Then Rihanna sang Only Girl (In the World) , where Rihanna danced again in the foreground and men drummed in the background. At the end of the medley, fire rose at the end, after which Rihanna disappeared backstage.

On February 15, 2011, Rihanna sang a medley of Only Girl , S&M and What's My Name? At the 2011 BRIT Awards . She was obliged to sing the full version of S&M to promote the song for its single release, however Rihanna was informed by the bosses not to make her performance and dances too sexual, so she sang between Only Girl (In The World) and What's My Name? just a verse and the chorus . This was enforced by the BRIT Awards Corporation to prevent appearances like the season 7 finale of The X Factor on December 11, 2010, where Rihanna wore a provocative outfit and performed sexual dances almost half-naked.

Rihanna sang the song in Australia on her Last Girl on Earth Tour in February and March 2011 and will sing the song at every concert on her Loud Tour .

The song was also often performed live by other artists, the American singer and Rihanna's friend Katy Perry covered the song together with Whip My Hair and other songs on their California Dreams Tour in 2011. The British band One Direction covered the song Ende 2010 also live.

Cover versions

In late 2010, British singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding covered the song on BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge, and her cover version appeared on the B-side of her hit Lights in 2011 . On February 20, 2011, the American pop singer Katy Perry covered the song at the first concert of her “California Dreams Tour” in Lisbon , Portugal . The Irish group Westlife also covered the song on their "Gravity Tour". The actress Ariana Grande also covered the song as a studio version, she often sings this song live at concerts. "It would be no surprise if the song brings Rihanna back to the top of the Hot 100 and the worldwide charts in a few weeks, so for me the probability is very high that Only Girl (In the World) will be Rihanna's third number in a few weeks. One hit in the US in 2010 (after Rude Boy and Love The Way You Lie ) and her eighth overall in the Hot 100. "

Gerrick D. Kennedy of the Los Angeles Times said, “... So it looks very good for (Only Girl) to be her next front runner. …. "
