7 is the seventh studio album by French DJ and producer David Guetta . It was released worldwide on September 14, 2018 via "What a Music" and "Parlophone" as well as the major label " Warner Music ". The album consists of two CDs. While the first disc is the more commercial one and only contains vocal tracks, CD2 is a mixtape of his side project Jack Back, which was released on September 6, 2018. This is characterized by electronic music and contains almost no features. Collaborations for the studio album took place with Jason Derulo , Martin Garrix , J Balvin and Anne-Marie , among others .

background

First announcements

Already on January 27, 2017 Guetta commented on his upcoming studio album. It was a live interview on Facebook with Final Kid, which was broadcast on Facebook, in which he said that his upcoming album would be less melodic and that he would rather rely on computer-generated sound. In addition, he would keep most of the included songs covered for now. At the same time, he gave first information about his upcoming singles.

In June 2017, Guetta focused for the first time on the first output from 7 . This happened with the upcoming single release of the song 2U , which was created in collaboration with the American singer Justin Bieber . After the song premiered on several social media networks on June 5, 2017 , the title, collaboration and release date were announced there. In the wake of the single release, Guetta gave an interview with MTV's Lucas Fothergill on June 8, 2017 , in which he said he had been working on 7 for over a year by then , but intended to give himself more time . He also said that he really wanted to release some of the new music and saw this as the beginning of a new section. This new section would start with 2U .

First releases and links to the album

In the last week of September 2017, he said in an interview at the iHeartRadio Festival that “there are a lot of new songs on the horizon”. In the coming week he would make the final decisions about his upcoming single. He also announced that 2U would definitely be part of his upcoming album, which is almost finished.

On October 27, 2017, the release of the song Dirty Sexy Money was announced. It was a collaboration with the Dutch DJ and producer Afrojack , with whom he had been working regularly since 2010, singer Charli XCX , rapper French Montana and Skrillex, who worked as a co-producer . He left it open whether this track would also be part of the studio album.

In an interview posted by Jack Hardwick on the Daily Star on November 17, 2017 , he said that work on his upcoming studio album was in full swing and that he would see a release the following year as realistic. He also said that the style of the tracklist would be based on the most recently released singles.

Similar to Dirty Sexy Money , the song So Far Away , which premiered at Tomorrowland 2017 , was released as a single on December 2, 2017, which was not associated with a long player. The track was produced in collaboration with the Dutch DJ and producer Martin Garrix . The musicians already worked together on the songs Blue Flames (unreleased) and Clap Your Hands (Garrix only given in the credits). Jamie Scott and Romy Dya appeared as guest singers, while the female guest part was originally sung by British singer Ellie Goulding . This was excluded from the collaboration for internal management reasons.

On January 22, 2018, an interview was published in the Berliner Zeitung , on the one hand about the change in the music world in relation to data carriers and Guetta's new work. He compared the studio work on an album with the topping of a pizza:

“Making an album is not like making pizza,” he said. “You have no recipe and no guarantee that it will taste good. If I'm not completely satisfied, I prefer to wait for the right inspiration "

- David Guetta : Berliner Zeitung

He also dated the release of his seventh studio album on the summer of the same year.

On January 28, 2018, David Guetta confirmed his next collaboration with Martin Garrix. The Dutch producer Thijs Westerbroek alias Brooks and singer-songwriter Talay Riley also took part. The song is said to be called Like I Do and to be more EDM-heavy than Garrix and his predecessor. The release was announced for the following month via Garrix record label "STMPD RCRDS". In the end the release took place via "What a Music". A week earlier, the song Mad Love was released as a single, on which he first worked with the Jamaican rapper Sean Paul . Singer Becky G contributed further vocals . According to an interview that appeared in the Swiss financial magazine “CNNMoney” the week before, he was originally only supposed to be listed as a producer.

On March 16, 2018, Guetta announced via Twitter that another single would be released. It was the song Flames , his seventh collaboration with the Australian singer and songwriter Sia Furler . The publication followed a week later. Here, too, there was further speculation whether the sound carrier would serve as a preliminary single for his upcoming album. Guetta left this open and did not comment on this.

First information on style direction

After two successful collaborations, Martin Garrix posted a picture on Instagram in mid-April 2018 in which he could be seen together with David Guetta and the producer duo Stargate in a studio in Los Angeles . At the same time he began a visual stylistic change by shortening his hair, among other things. In an interview with the German business magazineBusiness Punk ” he said that his studio album “got a little funkier”. The change in his look related to this and explained: “That was a good idea! New album, new look. "

In May 2018, South African DJ and producer Black Coffee gave an interview about his current studio work. In addition to the names Akon and Pharrell Williams , the name David Guetta was also mentioned. He said that he would support him in his current work on the new album. In the coming week they would meet together in the studio.

During his live appearance at Ultra Korea , the Frenchman played three previously unheard productions. It started with a collaboration with GlowInTheDark and Cesqeaux, followed by a collaboration with Brooks and a track with Showtek , with which he had already landed five times in the studio. The latter was also promptly announced as Guetta's upcoming single. The title was announced as Your Love and for a release on June 14, 2018. The song turned out to be a highly of Show Me Love by Robin S. affected production, but not Samplet the track directly. The singing of the single was provided by the Dutch singer Jake Reese.

First dating

Towards the end of the month he also spoke to various magazines about his studio work on the album. According to the “Young Post” he would have “spent 4 months in the studio day in and day out”. In "Billboard Radio China" he announced that his studio album would be finished in June 2018 and would be released after the summer. However, he remained silent about collaborations and the title.

On July 6, 2018, the single release of the song Say My Name was announced via Spotify . It should be a collaboration with the American actress and singer Demi Lovato and the Colombian musician J Balvin . Release should be July 13th, 2018, but the track did not appear in stores, a statement was not published. On July 24, 2018, Jean-Charles Carre, part of the team guetta, revealed that the song would not come. It was only announced at the end of August 2018 that the song with Bebe Rexha's vocals would be included on the upcoming studio album.

On July 27, 2018, the single release of the song Don't Leave Me Alone followed , which was recorded with the British singer Anne-Marie . Not far before that, Marshmello was a number one hit in several European countries. The future bass suction embodied a different style than its predecessor. At the same time as the single, the American singer Lenny Kravitz released the David-Guetta remix of his current single Low .

On August 20, 2018, the song Overtone was released on Guetta's record label "Jack Back" and " Spinnin 'Records " . The name David Guetta was not mentioned, but in previous years it was assumed by several Jack-Back releases that David Guetta would release underground music under this very release.

Complete reveal

With the release of one of the last pre-singles, the title, the single cover, the entire tracklist and the release date were officially announced on August 23, 2018. The single that appeared on the market that day was titled Goodbye and represents a collaboration with singer Jason Derulo , singer and rapper Nicki Minaj , with whom he has been in the studio twice to date, and French rapper and producer Willy William . The last Buzz single drive followed on the following day . This represents the collaboration with Black Coffee announced in May 2018.

On September 7, 2018, Guetta released an entire mixtape under the alias Jack Back. While a new collaboration with the American singer CeCe Rogers was included on the mixtape, producers like Adam Freeland and Ralph Wegener were also used. The last track is a remake of Guetta's and Chris Willis single Just a Little More Love . Guetta himself commented on the mixtape on the BBC One radio show by Pete Tong :

“With '7' a circle closes for me and therefore I wanted to go back to the origins of this circle. I started out in underground house music once, played all the raves and clubs in Paris. I just wanted to play music for fun, with no commercial ulterior motive. I wanted to make any kind of music I like, I do it out of the love of music. "

- David Guetta : Warner Music

On September 14, 2018, the long player was finally released under the title 7 with a selection of previously published songs as well as previously unplayed songs. The second CD is the mixtape of his alias Jack Back, released a week earlier. After the previous studio album Listen was related to the divorce of his ex-wife Cathy Guetta and was titled as a separation album , he described this album as I am -re-in-love-album , referring to his current girlfriend Jessica Ledon.

In addition to the featuring artists, musicians such as Thomas Troelsen (songwriter for, among others, Jennie by Felix Jaehn ) and JR Rotem (songwriter for, among others, In My Head by Jason Derulo ) were there. Around 38 producers or producer teams supported Guetta in the studio. In addition to Giorgio Tuinford which assists in almost every Guetta song, lay down even at 7 sometimes Showtek , Glowinthedark and Afrojack over backwards. Several songs are based on samples of other songs:

  • Goodbye contains lines of text that match the song Time to Say Goodbye , written by Francesco Sartori, Lucio Quarantotto, and Franck Peterson.
  • She Knows How to Love Me contains elements from Tutti Frutti , written by Richard Penniman , Dorothy La Bostrie and Joe Lubin.
  • Let It Be Me is based in the main part on the melody from Tom's Diner , which was composed and written by Suzanne Vega .

  • Grenade contains a sample of the song We Want Your Soul , produced by Adam Freeland and Damian Taylor
  • Overtone contains elements of Altai Sayan Tandy-Uula , which was written by Andrei Mangush.

Several different studios were used for the mixing. The producer duo Daddy's Groove, who use the Tribe Studio in Naples, was responsible for the majority of the songs. They also took care of the mastering. They already took on this job in previous years and on previous albums. Brooks also mastered the song Like I Do at Muziekfabriek Studios in the Netherlands and Serban Ghenea mastered a large part of the songs at MixStar Studios in Virginia Beach . The vocal recordings for a single song sometimes took place in different studios, depending on the featuring artist.

His two children assisted him in choosing the songs that would make it onto the album, as he announced at the long player's launch party. "The children are the future!" He said. "I always think about the future and am not too interested in the opinions of people my age."

Single releases

2U

Justin Bieber , singer from 2U

The song 2U was released on June 9, 2017 as the first single from the album. The song is a collaboration with the Canadian singer Justin Bieber . The producers Poo Bear and Cesqeaux were also involved in the creation of the song .

About the creation, Guetta said that he had been in contact with Poo Bear for some time, but that Bieber only joined the collaboration later, for which Poo Bear appears responsible:

“We [Poo Bear and I] had worked together for years writing a lot of songs together and then he surprised me by playing Justin one of our demos without letting me know. And then one day he said, 'David, read this email, I have a surprise for you.' 'I said' okayyyy 'and he actually asked Justin if he'd like to record the song. It was the greatest surprise ever. '"

- Lucas Fothergill : MTV

After the song enjoyed great popularity in advance on social media platforms, the song was released. In a press release, Guetta revealed:

“Justin has such a unique voice and I have a lot of respect for both his talent and his choices. He took some risks that have made him reinvent himself in such a cool, amazing and creative way lately. I am very proud to finally be able to share a record with him. I would describe '2U' as an incredible combination of emotional energy and a huge melody combined with biting sounds. "

- David Guetta : Billboard

2U developed into a great success and reached a top 10 position in over 29 countries and sold over 2.5 million copies. Two music videos were produced for the single. The first shows four models from the underwear fashion brand Victoria's Secret , the second a relationship drama. He confirmed that the song would be part of his studio album when the song was released and thus over a year before its release.

Dirty Sexy Money

Charli XCX , singer of Dirty Sexy Money

Dirty Sexy Money is the second pre-release single of 7. The Dutch DJ and producer Afrojack as well as the Swedish singer Charli XCX and the French rapper French Montana are active as guest musicians . The publication took place on "Parlophone" and "What a Music". The American trap and dubstep producer Skrillex assisted as producer .

The song premiered during Guetta's performance at ADE when Afrojack came on stage with him at the beginning of the song. The studio version was first introduced on Zane Lowe's “Beat 1” radio show. Lowe contacted Guetta and Charli XCX via Facetime , whereupon the Frenchman described the song as "the recording I've wanted to make my whole life". Charli XCX said about the admission process:

“I was in LA and actually worked on several of David's songs in the studio. We had already finished some things and then I heard this song and I was immediately drawn to the song. I wrote with Noonie Bao and AG Cook and this song caught me right away. David came down to the studio and somehow the song made us feel connected. It triggered such a party feeling in me. "

- Charli XCX : Beat 1

The music video was released on December 14, 2017 directed by Charli XCX and Sarah McColgan. In the video you can see Guetta as an escape driver, Charli XCX as the boss, Afrojack as a back-strengthener and French Montana as an explosives expert. The masked characters are led by Charli XCX and rob a man's safe.

Dirty Sexy Money could not follow up on the success of its predecessor, but nevertheless moved up into the upper half of the chart in over 11 countries and has around 360,000 units sold.

The song made it onto the studio album as a bonus track.

So far away

Martin Garrix , collaboration partner of So Far Away

The song So Far Away was released on December 1, 2018 as the third release of the studio album. The track was produced in collaboration with the Dutch musician Martin Garrix after an unreleased collaboration and co-production from Garrix 'side. So Far Away contains vocals from singer-songwriter Jamie Scott and singer Romy Dya. The style of the song can be classified in the field of future bass, which stylistically connects to the two previous commercial Garrix singles.

Originally, the female part was to be taken over by the British singer Ellie Goulding , who was considered a dream feature for Garrix. However, the song premiered at Tomorrowland 2017 without the approval of her management and should definitely be released as a single, while Goulding wanted to continue to focus on her studio album. Management requested the temporary closure of the single, whereupon Guetta and Garrix removed their part from the song. The whole process was made public on Twitter. On Garrix's accusation that she didn't want to release the song, she wrote:

"" She didn't want to release the song "is completely untrue and unfair. I love the song! […] They played the song at a festival before I even heard the finished production, which I had no problem with, but it didn't go well with my management or label. I've always loved the song very much. "

The final version of the song with Jamie Scott and Romy Dya, who was previously involved in various projects on Garrix's record label "STMPD RCRDS", was released through Garrix's record label. Poo Bear also worked as a co-writer .

The official music video was released on the same day as the single and shows a young couple who are going through a relationship crisis and finally decide to go their own way. Garrix's silhouette can be seen occasionally, which means that he does not play a leading role as in the videos of his past commercial singles.

The title became a commercial success, reaching the top 20 in seven countries. Sales amounted to around 171,000 pieces. On the studio album, the song takes the place of a bonus track.

Mad Love

Becky G , singer of Mad Love

With the fourth single Mad Love , Guetta released a dancehall song on February 16, 2018. This was developed in collaboration with rapper Sean Paul and singer Becky G . In an interview with Contactmusic in June 2017, Paul said that he was currently working on a song with the Colombian singer Shakira . The song was titled Mad Love and was about “being crazy and having love, it's sexy. But actually it's not about love at all, but much more about sexiness itself ”. In August 2017, he came back to the song in an interview with " Billboard " and stated that the song should originally be called Temple .

But the collaboration with Shakira failed, which is why Sean Paul was forced to look for a new singer for the song. The reason given was a legal problem. Originally, Rita Ora was contacted as a replacement, but she would have been too busy, as Paul announced in an interview with the Daily Star. He said several singers “tried the song. One of them was Shakira, but that ended up in a bureaucratic situation and a second person was Rita Ora. ”In the end, Becky G. Shakira was chosen, but remained part of the credits in which the singer Ina Wroldsen also appears.

In a press release, Sean Paul said of the song:

“I worked on this record for a long time. It was fun to work with David Guetta and his team to give this production the perfect sound. Being able to work with Becky G and hers was simply great. A lot of love to everyone! The song is full of energy and I can't wait for people to hear it! "

- Sean Paul : Bleu Magazine

David Guetta added that they worked on the song for two years and he would be grateful that the song was finally released. He would be proud to be part of the track and praise Paul for his "unique style" and Becky G for her singing that "just brings it all together". Becky G stated that she values the opportunity to work with "an icon like Sean." "She sees Mad Love as a song that" brings people together "and" brings about the energy it takes to get up and running to be able to enter the dance floor. "

The official music video was released on March 15, 2018. It shows all three musicians in a Miami nightclub with a number of scantily clad girls.

Commercially, Mad Love became not only a club hit, but also a single chart success. The song reached a top 20 position in over 9 countries and number 6 on the US dance charts. With over 365,000 units sold, the song went platinum in one country and gold in two countries. On 7 the song was included as a bonus song.

Like I Do

Brooks , next to Garrix at Like I Do , also there

The fifth single is the song Like I Do. The song was released on February 22nd, 2018 via "What a Music" and is his second official collaboration with Martin Garrix. Another guest musician is the Dutch DJ and producer Brooks , who is also behind the songwriting of the track Blame It on Love on the studio album . In contrast to So Far Away , this song is not based on a future bass pattern, but rather corresponds to a mixture of future house and future bounce, which makes it far more suitable for clubs. There is also a vocal part in the song, which was contributed by the British singer and songwriter Talay Riley. However, the vocal part was heavily distorted.

Guetta said about the second single that when they were in the studio they had "already worked on several tracks". After "seeing the great feedback on So Far Away " they would have decided, "fuck, we're going to release another track together." Martin Garrix went on to say that he had "a lot of respect for him as a performer" and that he would be very happy that they can release another track together. He also positively highlights Brook's contribution and emphasizes that he has collaborated with him several times.

The song premiered on December 29, 2017 with a live performance by Martin Garrix at the Timeout 72 Festival in Goa , India . The first time that it was a collaboration between the three producers was confirmed in mid-February 2018. An official music video was not released, but a lyric video was released on February 22, 2018. Garrix and Guetta declared in an Instagram livestream that the success of the song exceeded the musicians' expectations and that they already had ideas for a follow-up.

Commercially, the song was very successful despite its relatively low radio friendliness and moved up to the top 20 places in five countries. In France, the song reached gold status after a few months for over 100,000 units sold.

Flames

Sia , singer with Flames

On March 16, 2018, David Guetta released the song Flames as a single. This represents his seventh collaboration with the Australian singer and songwriter Sia . Compared to the majority of their previous collaboration, Flames was designed to be poppy and radio-friendly. In addition to Guetta and Sia, the British musician Chris Braide was also involved in the creation of the song.

In interviews he gave in the course of the Flames release, he kept reminding himself of Titanium , their first collaboration from 2011. He told the Independent that he was thrilled to learn that Sia would accept him for the studio recording of the song, given the superstar she'd grown into over the years. Again and again he emphasized that Sia is doubtful one of the musicians he prefers to work with. He describes her as a "great singer who has a great voice."

The official music video was released on April 5, 2018, after the lyric video was released on March 22, 2018. The music video shows three women played by Lauren Mary Kim, Courtney Chen and Erin Wu who are trained in combat training by their master Danny Trejo . Suddenly they are attacked by a group of ninjas and the master is killed. They are taken to a palace where they meet the emperor, played by David Guetta. After they try to break out, they jointly defeat a number of the Emperor and the Emperor. Lior Molcho directed the filming of the music video.

Commercially, Flames far surpassed the success of Like I Do and Mad Love . The song reached the top 10 of the singles charts in over 25 countries, including nine top spots. The song sold around a million times.

Your love

Jake Reese, singer of Your Love

Your Love was released on June 14, 2018 as the seventh single out of 7 . The track premiered at Ultra Korea and only a short time later it was announced via social media as a collaboration with Showtek and singer Jake Reese. The latter was only given in the credits, while his voice can be heard heavily distorted on the track. He worked with Showtek for the first time since When the Sun Goes Down .

The track was heavily inspired by singer Robin S.'s Show Me Love from 1990, but does not contain any direct samples. Stylistically includes Your Love to Like I Do , and embodies a club track, which in the area of Big rooms is classified. Nina Paul from the online magazine "The Mellow Music" praised the track for its build-up and wrote:

“Like“ Bad ”at the time, this incredibly euphoric track brings pitched vocals together with a carefree melody, enriched with clever percussion and surprising breaks - and of course some gigantic builds and drops. Beguilingly good synth chords pulsate over plucked 90s bass sounds, while the singing voice screws its way to heavenly heights and wonderful old-school pianos give the matter a rave touch. "

- Nina Paul : The Mellow Music

On the day of the single release, a lyric video was also released that had around 20 million views over four months. Like the single cover, it shows a classic car depicted in Pop Art . The design is reminiscent of the style he used for the promo singles of his previous studio album.

In the charts, the song proved to be less strong than its predecessors and only reached a position in the lower midfield in a few Central European countries.

Don't leave me alone

Anne-Marie , singer of Don't Leave Me Alone

With Don't Leave Me Alone , Guetta released a collaboration with the British singer Anne-Marie on July 27, 2018 , who celebrated worldwide success with several songs including Friends at the time and in 2002 . Noonie Bao, Sarah Aarons and producer Lotus IV also participated in the pop song. Before it became part of studio album 7 , it was also included on the digital re-release of Anne-Marie's studio album Speak Your Mind .

Shortly after the release was announced on social media, Guetta expressed his joy about the collaboration with the Briton. Due to the mixture of trap and pop, which could already be heard in the snippets, the song was quickly given the potential to become a summer hit. The vocal chops in the chorus and the use of autotune were also noted.

As with the last singles, a lyric video preceded it. The official music video was released on August 20, 2018. In this Anne-Marie plays the main role, while David Guetta can be seen again and again in the background. It can be seen in two shots. On the one hand she stands in a bright room and sings the song, on the other hand she can be seen trying to escape the daily routine by putting on VR glasses . In virtual reality, she meets a person with whom she bonds and with whom she experiences various adventures. At the end she takes off the glasses again.

Compared with Your Love cut Do not Leave Me Alone far more successful from. Although a top 10 position was only achieved in Scotland, Guetta and Anne-Marie advanced to the singles charts of over 20 countries.

Goodbye

Jason Derulo , singer from Goodbye

On August 24, 2018, Goodbye was released parallel to the announcement of the studio album. The song was created in collaboration with the American singer Jason Derulo and the singer and rapper Nicki Minaj . The French musician Willy William took part in both the instrumental and the vocals . But in the credits there are 10 other names that supported the songwriting. The track has lyrical and melodic parallels to the song Time to Say Goodbye by the Italian opera singer Andrea Bocelli . The song is described as a mix of R&B , Latin pop and Caribbean dance.

Guetta also stated regarding the recording of goodbye :

Incidentally, I recorded “Time To Say Goodbye” three years ago, long before “Despacito”. Another lesson in letting go. I felt the Latin wave was going to be huge, but I wasn't sure, I was scared and held the song back. I would have been a pioneer. That was really stupid of me. "

- David Guetta : n-tv

An official lyric video for the song was released on August 23, 2018. This is fully animated and shows the lines of text in front of a tropical background. This was accessed around 35 million times after four months. On October 22, 2018, Jason Derulo released the official Goodbye music video on YouTube . This shows all four participants. The main role can be seen in Derulo, who wakes up in a hotel room in London with a young woman in his arms. He leaves the room before she wakes up, after which she thinks the night is a one-night stand. Derulo is on his way to his B2B concert with David Guetta. While he is on stage, he recognizes the woman from last night in the audience and asks her to come onto the stage. Nicki Minaj and Willy William have individual appearances in the video.

Goodbye followed on from the success of Don't Leave Me Alone . Here, too, chart positions were achieved in various countries, but this time too it was not enough for places in the top 10.

Drive

Black Coffee (left), collaboration partner at Drive

With Drive , the last pre-single of the album was released on August 24, 2018 via " Ultra Records ". The track was recorded in collaboration with South African DJ and producer Black Coffee. British singer Delilah Montagu contributed the vocals. The songwriting was also assisted by the American singer and songwriter Ilsey Juber, who is known for her work on Robin Schulz 's song Headlights . Drive is described as cool and sensual, dark and melodic. The song would be full of secrets and longings that would be even more magical with Montagu's almost creepily beautiful performance and a wide range of structural percussion.

Black Coffee announced in May 2018 that it would currently work with Guetta. According to Guetta, the song was completed within 24 hours. In an interview with Stubhub, he said:

“The Black Coffee track is one of my favorites from the album. I spent a few months in a Los Angeles studio and said, 'Hey. Come over and say hello whenever you want. '. It all ended with us asking each other, 'Why don't we just produce a track now? "

- David Guetta : Stubhub

Although the song received good reviews, it could not achieve single chart positions. Nevertheless, after two months the track had 7 million clicks on both YouTube and Spotify.

Say my name

Bebe Rexha , singer of the song Say My Name

On October 26, 2018, the track Say My Name was released as the eleventh single from the studio album. The release was first announced on October 23, 2018 by the online magazine "Popline". It is a collaboration with the American songwriter and singer Bebe Rexha and the Colombian musician J Balvin . Among the songwriters, the names Thomas Troelsen and Emily Warren appear, both of whom are also active as solo artists. Parallels are drawn with the songs of the same name by Destiny's Child from 1999 and Tove Styrke from 2017.

Say My Name was originally supposed to be released as a single between early and mid-July 2018. At that time, the female vocal part was taken over by the singer Demi Lovato . A Spotify banner on July 5, 2018 promised the song would be made available the following day. However, this did not happen. According to several magazines, the release was only postponed by a week and a single cover should also have leaked. But on July 13, 2018, the song was not released as a single. At the end of the month, Don't Leave Me Alone was finally announced as the upcoming single. When asked about Say My Name's whereabouts via Instagram, Jean-Charles Carre, a member of David Guetta's team, announced that the song would never see the light of day. Reasons for the cancellation and takeover of the vocals by Rexha were not given.

At the end of August 2018, Guetta announced the tracklist of the studio album, which also contained that song. However, this was a re-recorded version with Bebe Rexha. After the album was released, Say My Name became the most successful album track, counting over 30 million plays on Spotify after just one month and reaching the single charts in Germany, Austria, Australia and Great Britain through streams and downloads.

On October 24, 2018, Guetta announced in his Instagram story that the official music video had been shot the previous night. All three artists were present, the director is said to have been directed by American director Hannah Lux Davis .

Before the official music video was released, a lyric video made the start. This was released on October 26, 2018 together with the single and reached over 2 million views within a week. On September 17, 2018, the verified YouTube music channel "Unique Vibes" published a self-made lyric video. This generated around ten million clicks in the first two months. The official music video, published on November 20, 2018, had around 300 million views by February 2019.

After the album track was released as a single, it entered the single charts for the first time in Canada, France and several Southeast European countries.

7 received mostly mixed reviews. In an article that dealt with the music releases of the week, "described MTV " studio album as "huge" and "filled with features and Bops that will take you to 2019 for dancing." Elias Leight wrote for the " Rolling Stone " that the first half of the album was known for Guetta, "replete with the kind of cross-genre collaborations that made Guetta a global star." He also noted that Guetta's album was in line with current trends by incorporating afro house (his Black Coffee collaboration) and reggaeton with two songs with J Balvin . He added to his review by saying that Guetta missed the moment by revealing that he himself was behind the alias Jack Back. “It would of course have been bolder if Guetta had released an album under the false name and kept his identity a secret. But there is no point in being brave if you want to play it safe. " The Times ' Will Hodgkinson wrote that" Disc One is made of cheesy pop, "while" Disc two has its credible roots as house and techno DJ “show. He also described the commercial collaborations as pure "formula hit fodder" that "drowns in a sea of auto-tune".

A more positive review comes from Allmusic magazine. There, Neil Z. Yeung gave the album 4 out of 5 stars and said that Guetta “seems to be entering a free-spirited late comfort zone where music is for fun instead of chasing one radio hit after another” and compared CD numbers 1 with a "festival headlining set that's nicely built in front of an unyielding middle distance that degrades the euphoria in the end." Yeung also described the album as "solemn" and ended his review by stating that Guetta had been since " One Love no longer sounded so uplifted and investing ”. "7 is the sheer joy of seeing the memory that Guetta is still a master of the genre."

Commercial win

The studio album reached high chart positions. In several Central European countries, including Germany, Belgium and the Czech Republic, 7 entered the top 10. He made a similar entry in Australia, Great Britain and Scandinavia. Overall, the album climbed to the top 10 in 13 countries, while it hit 37th in the US and topped the dance / electronic album. Guetta followed the success of Listen , but could not match the success of Nothing but the Beat . After just two weeks, 7 achieved gold status in Canada with 40,000 units sold. After almost every single was able to reach a chart position, the songs Battle and Say My Name also succeeded after the album was released . The latter in particular reached the top 100 in many countries.
