Commander is an electro - house - contemporary R&B track with 125 beats per minute . It was written by Kelly Rowland, Rico Love, David Guetta, and Sandy Vee. In terms of content, the song deals with fashion and competitiveness with other women, and it is also intended to encourage people to dance. Guetta produced the synthesizer - Dance -Beats which is similar to his previous productions Sexy Bitch and Boom Boom Pow . The song also shares similarities with Timbaland's productions . Rowland stated that the song's hookline should be aimed at dancing, not the military or commanding. “If I order you to dance ... I want to see you moving. Music video

The music video for the song was shot on May 5, 2010, directed by Japanese Masashi Muto. Muto previously shot commercials for Pepsi and Honda . Love and Guetta make cameo appearances in the music video. Fatima Robinson did the choreography in the music video. On June 1, 2010, an unfinished version of the music video hit the Internet. The British music channels MTV and MTV Base first broadcast the unfinished music video on June 8, 2010. Rowland told Rap Up TV: “The concept of the music video is very futuristic and great. I fight myself with my clothes, make-up and my dances.
