Work is the title of a song by the American singer Kelly Rowland . The song was written by Kelly Rowland, Jason Boyd and Scott Storch and produced by Boyd and Storch. Work was released as the third single from Rowland's second studio album Ms. Kelly , but not the album version was used, but a remix by the British duo Freemasons .

Emergence

In an interview with I Like Music , Kelly Rowland said:

“I had a lot of fun ... I was in the studio with Scott Storch and we wanted to write a party song. A song that makes you stand up and dance. So we went out and partied in a club. That's where we got the inspiration for Work . "

- Kelly Rowland

With Comeback, Work is one of the two songs that were created in collaboration with Scott Storch and recorded for the original version of Ms. Kelly , My Story, along with eight new songs. Rowland, Storch and his student Jason Boyd began working on ideas for a song in a rented studio , using an instrumental from Storch. After most of the lyrics were written after a night at a club, Work , originally called Put It In , was completed "within 20 minutes," according to Rowland. The vocal recordings took place the following day.

Rowland described the song as "actually very innocent," but "maybe a little aggressive. All I mean by that is that if someone just talks but doesn't do anything, then they shouldn't even try. "It would be about" a woman who is not easy to conquer and the man should make an effort. "

composition

Work is an up-tempo song with influences from funk and GoGo music. The song is written in E minor, has a tempo of 104 beats per minute and follows the classic verse-chorus form.

publication

Although Work was originally intended to serve as the album's lead single , Like This, produced by Polow Da Don , was released as a single. Rowland felt that Work had no hit potential after reading some negative blog posts after the first snippets of the song hit the internet. The full song leaked in May 2007, after which it was remixed by various artists, including Steve Pitron, Max Sanna and the better-known Freemasons , whose version was ultimately used for the single release. “I'm very grateful to the Freemasons for remixing the song. You always need new ideas and the remix gives the song new pep. "

Criticism

In contrast to most of the slower ballads on Ms. Kelly , Work is a faster song and has been praised for its danceability. Mark Edward Nero called Work an "excellent Destiny's Child song that hides Kelly Rowland's vocal deficits perfectly behind a sensational beat." BBC's Gemma Padley compared the song to Destiny's Child's Bug A Boo and Lose My Breath and praised it the "jagged singing" and the danceable rhythm. Akuma calls Work and Like This , "party bangers," which "show what today's R&B album should sound like."

Benjamin Buntzel, Laut , criticized the resemblance to Destiny's Child. He wrote that it felt like "as if you had already run into one or the other rhythm in a cheap R'n'B shed."

Music video

The music video for Work was filmed on July 26, 2007 in Los Angeles , California . At the same time, the video for the single Comeback was shot. Both videos were directed by Philip Andelman.

The video was originally scheduled to premiere with the Ghetto video on September 17, 2007, but these plans were not carried out due to some confusion as to which single should be the next as the artist had three unreleased videos. After the record label had set the premiere date for the video on October 22nd, this was postponed again until the premiere finally took place on December 5th, 2007 on the So Urban website.

The music video was adapted to the Freemasons remix by Work and shows Kelly Rowland and her dancers dancing and singing in front of several different colored backgrounds. The video also includes some close-ups of Rowland and choreographies. The use of fluorescent tubes that stand in the middle of the room or hang on the walls as light structures is also noticeable. The video is also included on the 2-track single from Work .
