The music for the musical film Greatest Showman by Michael Gracey , which was released in US cinemas on December 20, 2017, was composed by John Debney and Joseph Trapanese . The soundtrack to the film, for which Benj Pasek and Justin Paul also wrote nine songs, was released on December 8, 2017. As part of the Golden Globe Awards 2018 , the song This Is Me , which is included on the soundtrack, was recognized as best film song .

Creation and publication

The music for the musical film Greatest Showman by Michael Gracey , which was released in US cinemas in December 2017, was composed by John Debney and Joseph Trapanese . Some of the songs from the film are from the musicians who already composed songs for the film La La Land . Nine of the songs were written by Oscar winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul , including This Is Me , sung by Keala Settle , and The Greatest Show , which she sings with Hugh Jackman , Zac Efron and Zendaya , also in the film contribute. This Is Me also served as background music for several trailers for the film and was released in advance by Atlantic Records on October 26, 2017 , including on YouTube. The song The Greatest Show was also released in advance . It is at Greatest Showman a biopic about the circus pioneer PT Barnum , who is played by Jackman. Settle plays a bearded woman in the film. The song Rewrite The Stars , which is also on the soundtrack, is sung by Efron and Zendaya, who both play Barnum employees named Phillip and Ann in the film, and describes flying together at an artist show.

Justin Paul said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in November 2017 that director Michael Gracey wanted the music to be shaped by the spirit of pop songs and contemporary music, while still being traditional in the sense of a musical theater piece. Hugh Jackman is known as a singer and dancer from Oklahoma! , The Boy from Oz and Les Misérables , Paul said, and it was exciting to work with him to bring his vocal skills to this contemporary sound. Paul said about the song This Is Me that it was supposed to be sung by another character in an intimate moment accompanied by a banjo or ukulele, but the director kept pushing for a hymn for the weird ones in the film, for them bearded lady, contortionists and other performers to show that they claim their identity and are ready to stand up against the world and anyone who abuses or tries to disenfranchise them. So the song was tailored to Lettie, the bearded lady, who opens up to all of us with that one moment.

The soundtrack includes eleven pieces of music and was released by Atlantic Records on December 8, 2017. In addition, a behind-the-scenes was released in the same month , in which Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Zendaya and the composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul talk about the work on the soundtrack.

Regarding the use of music in the film, Birgit Roschy from epd Film remarks that it never becomes clear why events from the 19th century are told using contemporary pop songs , and even Jenny Lind's classical singing is covered with a thick sauce of pathetic pop music.

Sidney Schering fromquotemeter.de describes the pieces on the album as "radio-compatible melodies that still stand with one foot in the musical tradition and do not say goodbye to the ear canals anytime soon."

Chart successes

The soundtrack entered the US soundtrack album charts at number 4 on December 22, 2017 and reached number 1 there the following week. At the end of 2017, the soundtrack also entered the Billboard 200 and reached number there in the second week of January 2018 1. After the soundtrack for the film Fifty Shades of Gray (March 2017), he was the first to reach the top position. At the same time, the song This Is Me entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 83 and the song The Greatest Show at number 95 . Rewrite The Stars by Zac Efron and Zendaya reached number 85 there. The soundtrack also reached number 1 in the British and Irish album charts . In the German album charts , the soundtrack reached number 5 on January 12, 2018, its highest ranking to date.

The track This Is Me went triple platinum in the UK and double platinum in the US, The Greatest Show went platinum in the US, The Other Side went gold in the US and UK. A Million Dreams was awarded platinum in the US and gold in the UK, From Now On was awarded gold and A Million Dreams (Reprise) was awarded gold in the UK and USA. The soundtrack is in the top 10 of the annual hit parade in the USA in 4th place. According to the IFPI market report, it was the world's most successful album of 2018.

Awards

On December 18, 2017, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced that the song This Is Me was in a shortlist of 70 songs from which the nominations for the Best Movie Song category at the 2018 Academy Awards were determined.
