Justin Hurwitz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Justin Hurwitz (born January 22, 1985 in Los Angeles ) is an American composer , screenwriter and two-time Oscar and three-time Golden Globe award winner. He made a name for himself above all as a film composer in collaboration with the director Damien Chazelle .

Life

Justin Hurwitz grew up mostly in Wisconsin and graduated from high school in suburban Milwaukee . His mother, Gail Hurwitz, a nurse, comes from an old Sephardic family in California . His father, Kenneth Hurwitz, was a writer . The family now lives in the Bay Area .

Justin Hurwitz and Damien Chazelle met as students at Harvard , where they played in the same music band. Later the two shared a room in the student dormitory. Inspired by their mutual love for the French film musical Die Regenschirme von Cherbourg (1964) both interrupted their studies and in 2009 shot the jazz film musical Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench in black and white . Chazelle took over the work on the script and the direction, while Hurwitz was responsible for the romantic film music. Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench was, to their own surprise, invited to the Tribeca Film Festival in New York , won several film awards and was shown in American cinemas.

In 2014, Chazelle and Hurwitz worked together in the same capacity on the music film Whiplash , which received three awards at the 2015 Academy Awards . The high point in their joint work so far came with the multi-award-winning film musical La La Land (2016), with Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in the leading roles. In 2017, Hurwitz was honored with two Golden Globe Awards in the categories of film music and film song (“City of Stars”). When the Oscar nominations were announced in 2017 , it was considered with three nominations ( best film music , two nominations in the category of best film song for "City of Stars" and "Audition (The Fools Who Dream)"). Hurwitz won the awards for the best film music and the best film song for "City of Stars" (together with the songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul ).

In addition to working as a film composer, Hurwitz appeared as a screenwriter for sitcoms , including the partially improvised sitcom The League (2011-2015).

In 2017 he was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which awards the Oscars every year.
