action

Barnum's American Museum in 1858

PT Barnum, son of poor people, loses his job but has an idea. He founds Barnum's American Museum of Curiosity , a cabinet of curiosities with wax figures and stuffed animals. When his daughters point out to him that he is only exhibiting dead objects, he hires a very small person and a bearded woman, among other things. In addition, Barnum is trying to put on a large and completely new type of show, in which acrobats, artists and dancers will also appear in addition to his human curiosities. With the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus he lays the foundation stone for modern show business. Phillip Carlyle, his assistant, falls in love with the trapeze artist Anne. He succeeds in bringing the troupe to the court of the English Queen Victoria, where Barnum meets the Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind and hires him to America. When he accompanies her on her US tour, Lind begins to make advances, which Barnum rejects, and returns home. After Lind canceled the tour in breach of contract, Barnum got into substantial financial difficulties.

The building in which it takes place burns down as part of rioting against Barnum's undesirable show by sections of society. Carlyle is saved seriously injured by Barnum. After news of Lind's rapprochement and the dire financial situation of Barnum's New York City, his wife leaves him and Barnum begins to drink.

The cast that Barnum has hired convinces him not to lose hope. However, Barnum's poor creditworthiness and lack of suitable locations do not make things any easier. The recovering Carlyle offers to make his winnings available to the show in exchange for them to act as partners from now on. Then the show is put back on its feet in a circus tent near the harbor and Barnum wins his wife back. The reopened circus is a complete success and Barnum is handing the show over to Carlyle to focus on his family.

Biographical background

PT Barnum was an American circus pioneer and politician. He trained in small retail stores in Connecticut and ran a small store in his hometown as a young man. He sold lottery tickets in several outlets and founded a newspaper. In 1834 he moved to New York with his wife and young daughter to make his fortune there; soon he got into the showman trade. Barnum later dangled with various traveling circuses across the east and south of the United States.

Score, Marketing, and Publishing

Zendaya and Zac Efron talk about Greatest Showman .

The score is composed by John Debney and Joseph Trapanese . Some of the songs from the film are from the musicians who already composed songs for the film La La Land . Two of the songs were written by Oscar winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul , This Is Me , sung by Keala Settle , and The Greatest Show , sung with Hugh Jackman , Zac Efron and Zendaya . This Is Me also served as background music for several trailers for the film and was released in advance by Atlantic Records on October 26, 2017 , including on YouTube. The song The Greatest Show was also released in advance . The song Rewrite The Stars on the soundtrack is sung by Efron and Zendaya, and this describes how difficult it is for both of them to find each other due to their opposing origins. The soundtrack includes 11 pieces of music and was released on December 8, 2017 by Atlantic Records. In addition, a behind-the-scenes was released in the same month , in which Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Zendaya and the composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul talk about the work on the soundtrack.

On January 29, 2018, the album was awarded gold in the USA. In the UK, it was awarded a platinum record in March 2018. The title This Is Me went gold, A Million Dreams went silver.

A first trailer for the film was published at the end of June 2017, followed by another in November 2017. The film premiered on December 8, 2017 on board the Queen Mary 2 in New York, was released in US cinemas on December 20, 2017 and in German cinemas on January 4, 2018.

reception

Age rating

In the United States, the MPAA rated the film as a PG. In Germany the film is FSK 6 . The statement of reasons for the release states: “The film is staged at high speed, has a cheerful mood and deals with topics such as family, friendship and the fulfillment of lifelong dreams. In typical musical fashion, there is a constant change between short dialogues and vocal interludes . Conflicts are also dealt with through the songs. Occasionally there are dramatic scenes (e.g. a building fire or a fight), but these are short and quickly resolved. "

Reviews

Hugh Jackman , here at the premiere of the film in Japan, plays PT Barnum

Most critics rate the quality of the show as positive. Actors, singers and dancers, but also film technicians, did a well-crafted job and delivered appealing images and music that corresponded to the (also computer-aided) standards of the 2010s. That is what matters most, because the film is “not a classic biopic, which is about historical accuracy, but fireworks for the eyes and ears, with a brilliant cast and Oscar-worthy songs”, thus a product that - like its protagonist - I particularly value marketability and success with the paying audience. Apparently the musicals-loving audience generally appreciate the implementation of “optimism and thirst for action [...] in upwardly hurrying major cadences”.

Above all, weaknesses of the depicted material and the narrative technique are criticized. The negative sides of Barnum were not dealt with thoroughly enough. Above all, the film suffers from anachronisms: a 19th century opera diva sings as if the music of Celine Dion and Whitney Houston and microphones had already existed back then . The film also offers too many storylines and thematic approaches that are not dealt with carefully enough. The British BBC scoffs at the concessions made to prudish, moralizing American society: "The Greatest Showman is determinedly chaste, wholesome, family-friendly entertainment with no sex or swearing, and it is careful not to startle its viewers. Its messages are all positive without being controversial: don't judge people by their backgrounds; follow your dreams; don't follow your dreams if they take you away from your loyal wife. " ("'The Greatest Showman' is definitely chaste, healthy, family-friendly entertainment with no sex or cursing, and the film takes great care not to scare its viewers. Its messages are all positive without contradiction: don't judge people according to their social position; follow your dreams; but do not follow them if they lead you away from your loyal wife. ")

Birgit Roschy from epd Film says that the film consistently sweeps over the disreputable and especially the family scenes are often very kitschy. It also never becomes clear why events from the 19th century are told using contemporary pop songs , Roschy continues, and even the classic singing of the real Jenny Lind becomes "pathetic pop music" in the film, which is "covered in a thick sauce" will. Those who hope for nostalgic glimpses of PT Barnum's legendary performances, on the other hand, will be disappointed: “Neither the dazzling Barnum and certainly not its artists, who mostly appear as a wild dance group, acquire exciting contours. They remain staffage in a colorful, loud showbiz fairy tale that wants to overwhelm you with music and visual values - and in doing so it mostly lacks the screaming fantasy that Barnum conjures up. "This is countered by Michael Pekler from Standard :" How can one be , even if loosely connected narrative about appearance and show values come up with just such? With every picture trying to outdo the next, every song eating its way as a catchy tune? So perhaps best of all, like the previous advertising film director and visual effects specialist Michael Gracey in his directorial debut: The Australian himself built a number revue from the script by Beauty and the Beast director Bill Condon, his stars Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams and Zac Efron dressed in costumes reminiscent of the 19th century and highlighted all of his magnificent pictures with songs that could have been heard on Broadway yesterday. Perfect."

The US website "metacritic.com" evaluated 43 English-language reviews by January 9, 2018. Of these, twelve were positive, 22 were mixed and nine were negative. The film received an average rating of 48 out of 100 possible points.

Gross profit

After the film grossed 8.8 million US dollars on its opening weekend in the USA, it was able to bring in 15.5 million US dollars there on the second weekend, which meant an increase in revenues of around 77 percent. Since the beginning of the recordings, this had never succeeded in a film that had released in more than 3,000 US cinemas. The film's worldwide revenue from theatrical screenings is $ 434.6 million to date. In Germany, the film had around 758,000 admissions by November 2019.
