Seamus McGarvey

Seamus McGarvey , BSC (* 29. June 1967 in Armagh , Northern Ireland ) is a British cameraman for feature films and director of music videos .

Life

Seamus McGarvey studied cinematography at the Polytechnic of Central London for three years .

He began his film career as a still photographer before attending London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama , graduating in 1988. He then worked as a camera assistant and shot low-budget and short films with friends. Michael Winterbottom saw one of these short films and engaged McGarvey, then 24 years old, as cameraman for Butterfly Kiss (1995), his first feature film as responsible cameraman. He then began working on short films and documentaries , including the 1998 Turner Prize short film Atlantic . He has directed numerous music videos by British and Irish musicians, including for Robbie Williams , U2 , The Rolling Stones , Paul McCartney , Dusty Springfield and Coldplay . After a few short films, Stephen Frears hired him for his film High Fidelity (2000). From the mid-2000s, McGarvey took over camera work on films such as World Trade Center (2006), Atonement (2007), Nowhere Boy (2009), We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011), Marvel's The Avengers (2012) and Anna Karenina ( 2012). He has made several films with Sam Taylor-Johnson , including Fifty Shades of Gray , which won five golden raspberries in 2015.

Anna Karenina was his last film that he shot analog on celluloid . For all subsequent films he used digital cameras .

In 1998, McGarvey became the youngest ever member of the British Society of Cinematographers (BSC). Seamus McGarvey was 31 years old at the time.

In addition to the two Oscar nominations for Atonement and Anna Karenina , he won 13 film awards and was nominated for a further 34.
