action

Peter was left in an orphanage by his mother in 1926. One night he breaks into the director's office and comes across a letter that his friend Nibs reads to him because he has a reading disorder. In the letter, his mother promises to see him again one day, in this world or in another.

Every now and then some children disappear. The home manager explains to the other children that their parents have picked them up. Peter and his friend discover that the servants at the home are hoisting a pirate flag on the roof one night. Pirates then come through the roof and kidnap several children, including Peter. His friend Nibs was still able to save himself. The pirates are out on a flying sailing ship and bring the children to Neverland.

In Neverland, the pirates are subordinate to Captain Blackbeard, who lets the children toil in a mine. Peter messes with an overseer and is led in front of Blackbeard. This lets him run over the plank and fall into a deep hole. Shortly before the ground, Peter begins to hover - he can fly. This seems to have fulfilled an ancient prophecy that tells of a flying child. Blackbeard keeps Peter in his care.

After a short time, Peter is freed by James Hook. Together with the pirate Smee, they capture one of the flying ships and flee into the woods, where the ship crashes. You meet the natives around Tiger Lily, who hide from the pirates. They don't want to let the three move on before Hook starts a duel with one of the natives. The duel is interrupted by the attacking pirates, who were guided by Smee. Hook, Peter and Tiger Lily are able to escape.

Peter learns that his mother was killed by Blackbeard while defending the fairy kingdom. Shortly afterwards, he falls from a boat into the water and is attacked by crocodiles, who in turn are chased away by mermaids. Hook then separates from Peter and Tiger Lily, who go on a search for the fairy kingdom. Blackbeard is also on his way there to become immortal with their help.

In front of the entrance to the fairy realm, Peter and Tiger Lily meet Blackbeard's flying ship again. While Tiger Lily attacks the ship and her captain, Peter comes into contact with the fairies, especially Tinker Bell. He shows them how to fight Blackbeard. Hook comes to the rescue with another ship. In battle, Hook falls into an abyss. Peter, who did not want to fly for a while, falls behind and saves Hook. The attack of the fairies on Blackbeard's ship results in a collision with a rock wall. Peter escapes with Hook and Tiger Lily. After Blackbeard is defeated, Peter meets an apparition from his late mother who promises to always be a part of him and calls him "Peter Pan". Together with Hook and Tiger Lily, Peter brings Nibs and other children out of the home and takes them with him on their way to Neverland. Peter and Hook, who is now the captain of the ship that is now called "Jolly Roger", promise each other that they will always be friends.

reception

Reviews

Overall, the film was received with restraint. At Rotten Tomatoes , 26% of reviews are positive out of a total of 153 reviews; the average rating is 4.5 / 10. The critical consensus states: " Pan has some magical moments, but not enough to make up for the hasty plot and the high-pitched, CGI-overloaded action."

The film service ruled that the film "entertains as a feast for the eyes with luxurious equipment and cleverly used 3D". In narrative terms , Pan is "rather conventional fantasy food that warms up familiar plot and figure patterns in a moderately original way".

Rooney Mara and Amanda Seyfried were each nominated for the Golden Raspberry for Worst Supporting Actress .

Gross profit

The cost of producing the film, including marketing, was estimated at over $ 250 million. With worldwide marketing costs for the publication in other countries, it is estimated by analysts that it only covers costs from a gross profit of approx. 500 million US dollars. By November 28, the film grossed only about $ 123 million worldwide. Pan therefore joins Jupiter Ascending and A World Beyond in the list of the biggest financial flops of the year.
