A Map of the World is a film drama by Scott Elliott from the year 1999 . It is a film adaptation of Jane Hamilton's 1994 novel “A Map of the World” .

Alice Goodwin , a pediatric nurse, her husband and daughters move to a farm in a small town in Wisconsin . She befriends Theresa Collins , who after a while has a strong confidence in her. That's why she leaves her two children with Alice. One day the older daughter Lizzy drowns in an accident in the house pond, she was left unattended. Therefore, Alice makes great reproaches and the relationship with Theresa becomes alien.
A little later, Carole Mackessy reports Alice to the police for allegedly sexually abusing her son while she was examining him at school . The whole community stands behind her because everyone rejects the former city dweller. Therefore, other allegedly raped children also come forward. Alice is arrested and placed in custody . There the "old [white] chick" (quote) is downright bullied by the colored inmates .
Meanwhile, Alice's husband Howard Goodwin has to look after the two children, which is not easy for him. He builds up a relationship with Theresa, which is advantageous for the children because they have a female caregiver again, because they have no direct contact with their mother during their prison time. One evening, Howard and Theresa get closer - a kiss ensues. Howard later sells the farm and receives the money for the bail , after which Alice returns to Howard.
In the course of the process, however, it becomes clear that Alice did not commit rape, but that the allegations are just lies . All plaintiffs except Carole are withdrawing their complaints. In the further course it is found that Mackessy's child also just made up the story. Therefore Alice is acquitted. She moves back to the big city and makes friends with her new, old life.
