Ali G in da House (Original title: Ali G Indahouse ) is a comedy film from 2002. Sacha Baron Cohen , who also wrote the screenplay, plays in it his hitherto best-known character, the would-be gangsta rapper Ali G, whom he plays with his comedy telecast Da Ali G Show had made popular. Directed by Mark Mylod .

action

Ali G (short for Alistair Leslie Graham) is a "gangster" of the group West Staines Massive from the London suburb of Staines-upon-Thames . Because he injured his main scratch finger, he has been living on welfare and with his grandmother for years. As a sideline he gives courses at the John Nike Leisure Center. This should be closed. Since Ali is strictly against it, he goes on a hunger strike and is chained at a bus stop. The hunger strike only lasted a few minutes, Ali remains chained.

This caught the attention of Treasury Secretary David Carlton. He proposes Ali G as MP from Staines. Ali G accepts this in order to save his youth center from demolition, but Carlton wants Ali G to lose the election, even though Staines is considered to be the stronghold of the ruling party. The consequence would be that the Prime Minister would have to step down and David Carlton could replace him. By chance, Ali manages to involve the opposition party's candidate in a zoophilia scandal, so that he withdraws his candidacy. Ali G wins the elections with one vote ahead of the Liberal Democrat candidate and moves into the lower house ("da House").

In a parliamentary debate, he attracts the Prime Minister's attention when he disregards the rules of the House and is expelled from the Chamber .

Carlton proposes that the prime minister admit Ali to the cabinet in the hope that Ali will throw the government into crisis. However, Ali G's pragmatic suggestions make him very popular. The finance minister's plan seems to have failed.

As a diplomatic crisis in Africa expands and threatens to resurrect the Cold War , the British government hosts a UN crisis summit. By means of a marijuana - teas Ali G sets the delegates drugged and thus averts a possible world war.

Carlton manages to secure evidence of Ali G's authorship in marijuana tea history. Then a video appears that allegedly shows the Prime Minister having sex with a prostitute . In fact, however, Ali G, in the Prime Minister's coat and hat, and his girlfriend Me Julie can be seen. The Prime Minister has to resign and Carlton takes over the business of government on a temporary basis. To prove the prime minister's innocence and to win Me Julie back, Ali G wants to steal the videotape with his "homies" from the finance minister's safe . With the help of a pirate station he manages to gather around 50 members from other gangs. These connect the batteries of their cars and blow up the safe in this way. However, it does not contain the video , but, in addition to pornographic images, a blueprint for the airport expansion in the middle of Ali G's Staines district.

He and his friends, with the help of the Secretary of the Treasury and the Prime Minister, prevent the construction. Ali G is offered the post of Deputy Prime Minister as a thank you from the Prime Minister for his help. He refuses this and instead asks for the post of British "ambassador" to Jamaica . There he is assigned tasks such as tasting marijuana.

In the end credits Ali G mentions that one should recommend the film to all of his friends, since otherwise his terminally ill grandmother would not be able to afford a hip prosthesis .

Characters

Ali G is the main character in the film. His trademarks are his claim to have an oversized penis (60 cm), which is not true, and his quirky fashion sense . Ali lives with his grandmother, loves hip-hop and detests politics . When he's being recruited for that very reason, he's grumpy. Ali is convinced that God gave man “ marijuana ” as a gift.

Others

The film features a cameo- like encounter between the two characters Ali G and Borat, played by Sacha Baron Cohen . They clash and almost start a fight.

The film was never shown in cinemas in the USA. But it was very successful in Great Britain and was in 3rd place after a short time.

Reviews

“It's shrill, tasteless and chauvinistic - simply irresistible! […] It's a bit in the direction of Erkan and Stefan , but Ali G. also likes to get a bit more angry than these two. Or to put it another way: where Erkan and Stefan stop, Ali G. only begins. [...] Nice cinema entertainment, although without depth and certainly without lasting value for most, but also without boredom. "

- Zelluloid.de

Calling Ali G Indahouse the English revenge for Erkan and Stefan doesn't do the film justice; there is much more humor here. [...] It's actually a shame about the character of Ali G, which is well worth seeing, but despite the successful scenes, the film has to put up with the existential question of whether the world really needs him. "

- David Bergmann, filmstarts.de

“What may be thought of as a satire against the effects of hip-hop culture, indulges in non-binding slapstick of the most varied of quality and becomes the vehicle for the fictional character of a television show that enjoys cult status in Great Britain. The German dubbed version is also on the lowest Erkan-und-Stefan level. "
