Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (born July 15, 1986 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) is an American actor . He gained fame primarily through his roles in the films Baywatch , Greatest Showman and Aquaman as well as the Netflix series The Get Down .

Early years

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II was born in New Orleans as the youngest of six children of the American Muslim Yahya Abdul-Mateen I, who was born as John Ford, and the Christian Mary. He spent his childhood in the Magnolia Projects , a high-crime residential complex before the family moved to Oakland , California . There he attended McClymonds High School before moving to college in 2004, where he was active as a hurdler for the California Golden Bears athletics team at the University of California, Berkeley . He graduated from university with a bachelor's degree in architecture and initially found a job as an urban planner in San Francisco . However, since he longed to become an actor, he later attended the Yale School of Drama , from which he graduated with a Master of Fine Arts and first gained experience as a stage actor, for example at the Williamstown Theater Festival in Williamstown .

Acting career

Abdul-Mateen II first appeared in front of the camera in the short film Crescendo in 2012 . In 2016 he was cast in the role of Clarence "Cadillac" Caldwell in the musical-drama Netflix series The Get Down , which was discontinued after just one season, although it was the streaming provider's most expensive in-house production to date. One year he took on the role of Duane Jones in the film Sidney Hall, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival .

Also in 2017, he starred alongside Dwayne Johnson , Zac Efron and Alexandra Daddario as Sgt. Garner Ellerbee in the action comedy Baywatch and starred as WD Wheeler in Greatest Showman in the biography of the circus pioneer PT, alongside Hugh Jackman , Michelle Williams and Zendaya Barnum .

In 2018 he took on the role of DC villain David Kann / Black Manta in the movie Aquaman . In 2019, he starred as Cal Abar on the HBO series Watchmen , for which he received a nomination at the 2020 Primetime Emmy Awards .
