The Handmaid's Tale - The Handmaid's Tale (Original: The Handmaid's Tale ) is an American television series based on the book The Handmaid's Tale (Original: The Handmaid's Tale ) by Margaret Atwood is based. The series start was on April 26, 2017 at the video portal Hulu , after it was placed in April of the previous year with a direct order. In 2017, the series won the Emmy Award in several categories (best drama series and Elisabeth Moss and Ann Dowd for best actresses) and two Golden Globe Awards (best drama series and Moss). This makes The Handmaid's Tale the first series of a video-on-demand service to win the most important US television award for best drama series.

The German-language version of the first season was first published on October 4, 2017 on EntertainTV Series , a portal operated by Telekom Deutschland and its Telekom Entertain service .

The first two episodes of the series' second season were made available on Hulu on April 25, 2018. The other episodes were added on Wednesdays. The third season started on June 5, 2019 with the first three episodes on Hulu. It comprises a total of 13 episodes.

action

The series largely follows the plot of the book for the first season. From there, the story was freely developed from the second season. In America with a dystopian future, nuclear disasters , environmental degradation and sexually transmitted diseases have led to widespread sterility . In this society the totalitarian , Christian-fundamentalist state of Gilead is developing . Society is organized by power-obsessed leaders in a new, militarized, hierarchical regime of fanaticism and newly created social classes in which women are brutally subjugated and, among other things, are not allowed to work, own property, money or read. Instead, the last fertile women are owned by certain men. As a sign of this, these women lose their first and last name when they come into the possession of a man and have to adopt a new single name made up of the prefix “Des-” (in the English-language original “Of-”) and the suffix , consisting of the first name of the man to whom they belong, for example: Desfred , Desglen or Deswarren . If the women change hands (for example after the death of the husband), they must take the name of the new husband, such as Desglen , who becomes Dessteven .

The series is set to music at Studio Hamburg Synchron . Nadine Geist writes the dialogue books and directs the dialogue.

The state authorities reacted to a demonstration directed against this with volleys of machine guns. When Mrs. Waterford thinks June is pregnant, she becomes much nicer to her. But when June has her period again, Mrs. Waterford reacts angrily and forbids her to leave the room. Desglen is forcibly circumcised to remove her lesbian feelings.

June suffers from being "imprisoned" in her room. During a visit to the doctor, the doctor offers her to impregnate her instead of the commandant, as he is supposedly sterile. June refuses. At the fertilization ceremony with the commanding officer that follows on the same day, he has potency problems, so June is sent back to her room untouched. When she plays Scrabble again, she learns that her Desfred predecessor has committed suicide. With reference to this danger, she succeeds in having the commandant lift the "room arrest" pronounced by his wife. At the same time, the commandant translates for her the Latin sentence that her predecessor wrote on the plinth of the dressing room and that gave June hope during her arrest, without her knowing its meaning: "Don't let the bastards get you down."

Dessteven kidnaps a car in the market and deliberately runs over a guard with it. She will be taken away again. June remembers how she met Luke, the father of her child, who then separated from his wife. Mr. Waterford, who has now played Scrabble with June many times, gently touches June's knee during the "ceremony". She then angrily confronts him because she fears that his wife will send him to the "colonies", which usually results in a quick death. Although Nick admits to June that she is an "eye", she secretly visits him again, and the two are passionate about sleeping together.

When June tries to find Nick, he leaves his door locked so that she cannot get in. She visits Mr. Waterford and asks him to bring her daughter to safety from Mrs. Waterford. Contrary to the instructions she received, June opens the package and finds countless letters in it with reminders from various maids about the crimes committed to them. background

Margaret Atwood was consulted in developing the series to ensure that the progression of the story did not go against her expectations. For example, Atwood insisted that the main character's younger daughter must survive because she wanted to tell the story of her life.2019 appeared Atwood's novel The witnesses ( The Testament ), 15 years after the end of The Handmaid's Tale attaches. In it, Atwood paid attention to compatibility with the plot of the television series. In an interview, Atwood said that her further development of the character Aunt Lydia, who plays a central role in the sequel book , was shaped by Ann Dowd's portrayal in the television series. In the audio book version of the book, Dowd reads the parts of the text told from Aunt Lydia's point of view.
