action
The series largely follows the plot of the book for the first season. From there, the story was freely developed from the second season. In America with a dystopian future, nuclear disasters , environmental degradation and sexually transmitted diseases have led to widespread sterility . In this society the totalitarian , Christian-fundamentalist state of Gilead is developing . Society is organized by power-obsessed leaders in a new, militarized, hierarchical regime of fanaticism and newly created social classes in which women are brutally subjugated and, among other things, are not allowed to work, own property, money or read. Instead, the last fertile women are owned by certain men. As a sign of this, these women lose their first and last name when they come into the possession of a man and have to adopt a new single name made up of the prefix “Des-” (in the English-language original “Of-”) and the suffix , consisting of the first name of the man to whom they belong, for example: Desfred , Desglen or Deswarren . If the women change hands (for example after the death of the husband), they must take the name of the new husband, such as Desglen , who becomes Dessteven .
Cast and dubbing
The series is set to music at Studio Hamburg Synchron . Nadine Geist writes the dialogue books and directs the dialogue.

June suffers from being "imprisoned" in her room. During a visit to the doctor, the doctor offers her to impregnate her instead of the commandant, as he is supposedly sterile. June refuses. At the fertilization ceremony with the commanding officer that follows on the same day, he has potency problems, so June is sent back to her room untouched. When she plays Scrabble again, she learns that her Desfred predecessor has committed suicide. With reference to this danger, she succeeds in having the commandant lift the "room arrest" pronounced by his wife. At the same time, the commandant translates for her the Latin sentence that her predecessor wrote on the plinth of the dressing room and that gave June hope during her arrest, without her knowing its meaning: "Don't let the bastards get you down." | |||||||

background
Margaret Atwood was consulted in developing the series to ensure that the progression of the story did not go against her expectations. For example, Atwood insisted that the main character's younger daughter must survive because she wanted to tell the story of her life.2019 appeared Atwood's novel The witnesses ( The Testament ), 15 years after the end of The Handmaid's Tale attaches. In it, Atwood paid attention to compatibility with the plot of the television series. In an interview, Atwood said that her further development of the character Aunt Lydia, who plays a central role in the sequel book , was shaped by Ann Dowd's portrayal in the television series. In the audio book version of the book, Dowd reads the parts of the text told from Aunt Lydia's point of view.
