Olatunde Olateju Olaolorun "OT" Fagbenle , also known as OT , (born January 22, 1980 in London ) is a British actor , writer and director . He starred in a number of cinema, theater and television productions.

Childhood and youth

Born in London to a Nigerian father from the Yoruba ethnic group , the journalist Tunde Fagbenle and a British mother with Anglo-Irish roots, Ally Bedford, he was raised by the latter. As a child he moved to Spain and started learning alto saxophone . After less than a year he was playing in the South Coast Jazz Band and performing at the Edinburgh Festival . After moving back to England, he continued his musical career in big bands, including appearances at Wembley Arena and the Royal Albert Hall . His name "Olatunde" means "prosperity is coming back" in Yoruba . Among his younger brothers are the actor and film producer Luti Fagbenle , and the director and producer Daps . His sister Temi Fagbenle plays basketball in the American women's professional league and took part in the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Acting career

He began acting at the age of 14 and starred in an adaptation of William Shakespeare's Macbeth , with appearances at various international venues and at London's Bloomsbury Theater . He was trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and completed this training early in order to be able to give his debut in 2001 at the Royal Exchange Theater, Manchester in Les Blancs .

Fagbenle continued his career with other Shakespearian roles, starring in Romeo and Juliet as Mercutio in a national tour that culminated in 2004 at the Hong Kong Arts Festival . The Evening Telegraph judged his acting, "OT Fagbenle achieves the impossible by almost overshadowing the young lovers with his inspired performance of Mercutio" ("OT Fagbenle achieves the impossible by almost overshadowing the two young lovers with his inspired style of playing as Mercutio represents ").

Soon Fagbenle got his first leading role. Excellent reviews were a theater price of the Manchester Evening News for best actor in a leading role ahead for his portrayal of a man who pretends to Sidney Poitier 's to his son in John Guare 's award-winning work of Life - Six Degrees ( Six Degrees of Separation ).

In 2008 Fagbenle flew to Paris with theater director Peter Brook to support him in the production of Tierno Bokar .

Fagbenle played the role of Sporting Life in Sir Trevor Nunn's production of Porgy and Bess at the Savoy Theater in London's West End (the role played by Cab Calloway in the opera and Sammy Davis Jr. in the film of the same name). Once again, Fagbenle received excellent reviews.

Movie

In the film Breaking and Entering - burglary and theft (Breaking and Entering) with Jew Law and Juliette Binoche Fagbenle appeared in a supporting role. Also in love with Amy Heckerling's main thing (I Could Never Be Your Woman) , Fagbenle was seen in a supporting role alongside Oscar nominee Michelle Pfeiffer .

Fagbenle starred in the television series Thorne , a television adaptation of Mark Billingham short stories directed by Stephen Hopkins . In 2019 Deadline reported that Fagbenle would star in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Black Widow .

OT Fagbenle then became known to a wide audience in the role of Luke Bankole in the award-winning series The Handmaid's Tale. For his work there he was nominated several times by the Screen Actors Guild.

Fagbenle also starred in a BBC sitcom called Grownups and in the British television series Agatha Christie's Marple (Agatha Christie's Marple) . In the Doctor Who two-part series " Silence in the Library " and " Forest of the Dead " he played the 'Other Dave'. He appeared in Little Miss Jocelyn as Mrs. Omwokwopopo's dead (second) husband. In the BBC documentary drama Walter's War , Fagbenle played the officer Walter Tull . For this portrayal of the first "half-breed" to become an officer in the British Army , Fagbenle received excellent international reviews.

In 2009 Fagbenle played the role of Topher Kiefer in the ITV series FM .

In January 2010, Fagbenle starred as Chris on the BBC One show Material Girl , with Dervla Kirwan and Lenora Crichlow . After this engagement he became part of the cast of the American romantic comedy Double Wedding in 2011 .

Fagbenle was also seen in 2011 as 'Mark Lightfoot' in the sixth episode of the first season of Death in Paradise .

In 2012 Fagbenle took on a leading role in the BBC comedy Quick Cuts with actress Doon Mackichan after a break in which he had devoted himself to theater and projects as a writer .

In 2014, Fagbenle starred in the first season of the HBO drama Looking . There he plays 'Frank', a romantic musician from Ohio who has problems with his significant other.

Also in 2014, the BBC engaged Fagbenle for the lead role in the crime drama The Interceptor . The recording started in April 2014 in London. In 2015 he was nominated and awarded for the MViSA Awards for best male actor due to this acting performance.

After the second season of Looking , Fagbenle could be won for a leading role in Harlan Cobens drama series The Five .

On November 14, 2016, he appeared in a BBC2 adaptation of Zadie Smith's novella NW . In 2017 he began to play the role of Luke in Hulu's television adaptation of the dystopian novel The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood .

For several months in 2004 he took on the role of Kwame in the BBC World Service radio play soap opera Westway .

Again and again he joined the BBC on, including in a Leading Role in Life - A six-pack , as Marvin Gaye in a biography of the Soul - and R & B - singer , and in two roles in the BBC Radio -Adaptation of The Color Purple , who won silver in the 2009 Sony Radio Academy Awards in the Drama category.

Writer and director

In 2018, OT was hired by Channel 4 to act as screenwriter, director and actor on the sitcom Maxxx.

In 2015, O-T's debut film, the short Moth , came out, which later entered several competitions including the Los Angeles Screamfest Film Festival , the New York City Horror Film Festival and the Austin Film Festival .

He also wrote the script for a teaser, which he re-directed, for his idea for Big Bad Blood , a comedy series for teenagers.

Together with a leading actor, Fagbenle composed the music and wrote the lyrics for several songs for the NBC drama Quarterlife , which was created by Marshall Herskovitz and Oscar winner Ed Zwick .

In 2011 Fagbenle co-wrote the song "Storm" for Grammy-nominated artist Tyga on his Black Thoughts Vol. 2 mixtape and received over 8 million hits on worldstarhiphop.com. The song features singer Stefano Moses, a longtime musical companion of Fagbenle.

Awards and nominations

In 2019 Fagbenle was nominated for the SAG Award for his role in The Handmaid's Tale.

In 2018 Fagbenle received The Handmaid's Tale Award for the international Bafta.

In 2016, OT Fagbenle led his role to an Olivier Award - the most prestigious award in British theater - for his portrayal of Levee in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom at the Royal National Theater.

After John W. Bubbles in the original opera and Sammy Davis Jr. in the film, Fagbenle played the role of Sportin 'Life in the world premiere of Porgy and Bess - The Musical at the Savoy Theater in London's West End.

Fagbenle was named Best Actor in a Leading Role at MEN Awards for his performance in Six Degrees of Separation .

He received an Outstanding Achievement Award at the 13th African Film Awards.

Fagbenle launched the role of "Perry" in the production of the award-winning production of Fallout by the Royal Court.

In 2012, Fagbenle was nominated for Best Male Actor at the Off West End Awards for his 'charismatic' portrayal of Slupianek in The Conquest of the South Pole .

In 2015, Fagbenle was nominated for Best Male Actor on TV by the Screen Nation Awards for his performance as Frank on HBO's Looking .

In 2015, Fagbenle was nominated and recognized as Best Male Actor by the MViSA Awards for his performance in The Interceptor .
