Mark Philip David Billingham (born July 2, 1961 in Solihull , England ) is an English author of crime novels .

Life

Billingham grew up in Birmingham, studied drama and was a member of the theater group Bread & Circuses for a while , until he moved to London in the mid-1980s, worked as an actor and took on supporting roles in television series such as The Bill , Dempsey and Makepeace, Juliet Bravo and Boon . From 1989 to 1994 he played a goofy king's guard in the children's series Maid Marian and Her Merry Men .

Since 1987 he has appeared regularly as a stand-up comedian , was seen in various comedy series on British television and regularly took on the role of MC in the legendary comedy store in Hollywood.

He made his first writing experiences as a co-author of several episodes of Maid Marian and Her Merry Men . In the following years he wrote scripts for other TV series such as Harry's Mad (based on the novel by Dick King-Smith ), What's That Noise? and Knight School , in which he was also repeatedly seen as an actor.

His first detective novel was published in 2001 and opened the series around Detective Inspector Tom Thorne, which made Billingham famous, translated into numerous languages, won several awards and was made into a film by the BBC - with David Morrissey in the role of Tom Thorne.

Billingham fell victim to a crime in 1997 when he and Peter Cocks, with whom he has co-authored several scripts, were kidnapped, handcuffed and robbed in a room of a Manchester hotel . Billingham cited the incident as the inspiration for his second novel, Scaredy Cat ( The Tears of the Murderer , 2002).

Mark Billingham lives in London with his wife and two children.
