Preliminary round

September 6, 1982

The preliminary round was carried out in three runs. The first five athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the fastest female runner - highlighted in light green - qualified for the semi-finals.

Of the only eighteen participants, only two were eliminated, both in the first run. For the second run with five sprinters, this unsuitable rule meant that all runners were qualified for the next lap if they only reached the finish.
