Anelija Nunewa (married Wetschernikowa, Bulgarian Анелия Нунева ; born June 30, 1962 in Russe ) is a former Bulgarian athlete who was successful as a sprinter in the 1980s and the early 1990s .

Although the 1.67 m tall and 57 kg heavy Nunewa won numerous medals at major events, she never managed to win a title at a major international championship. She often took second place.

At the European Athletics Championships in Athens in 1982 , Nunewa was fourth in the 100-meter run and sixth in the 200-meter run . She also finished sixth at the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 1983 . At the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Gothenburg in 1984, she won the silver medal in the 60-meter run as well as two years later over 100 meters and in the 4 x 100-meter relay at the European Athletics Championships in Stuttgart. Also at the Universiade 1985 in Kobe, she was second in the 100-meter run.

1987 followed for Nunewa two more second places in the 60-meter run at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Liévin and at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Indianapolis. In the same year she was sixth over 100 meters at the World Athletics Championships in Rome . Due to the subsequent disqualification of the Canadian Angella Issajenko for doping, she moved up to fifth place in the ranking.

After Nunewa had improved the Bulgarian record in the 100-meter run to 10.85 s three weeks earlier, she was considered a promising medal candidate at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul behind the US world record holder and high favorite Florence Griffith-Joyner . However, she suffered a hamstring injury during the final and finished the race in eighth and last place.

At the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Genoa in 1992, Nunewa won her third silver medal in the 60-meter run. In the same year she was sixth over 100 meters at the Olympic Games in Barcelona , while she missed the finals in the 200-meter run. Her last significant international success she had at the European Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 1994, where she won the bronze medal in the 4 x 100 meter relay. She finished fourth in the 100 meter run.

After her active career, Nuneva moved to the United States with her husband Ivan Vechernikov. The couple has a son.
