Looking is an American comedy - and drama - television series of the TV channel HBO . The series is about a group of homosexual men in the metropolis of San Francisco who perceive the possibilities of life there. It first aired in the United States on January 19, 2014 after the launch of the series True Detective and the third season of the series Girls .

The three long-time friends Patrick, Agustín and Dom are openly gay and live in the very tolerant San Francisco , which is considered a gay stronghold. The 39-year-old Dom, who lives in a shared apartment with his best friend Doris, works as a waiter, but dreams of opening his own restaurant, just like his father used to have. The 31-year-old Agustín, who initially lived in a shared apartment with Patrick but then moved in with his friend Frank, works as an artist's assistant, but tries to be successful as an artist himself. 29-year-old Patrick works as a level designer in a video game company. He falls in love with the Mexican-born Richie, but also feels drawn to his new boss Kevin.

The broadcaster HBO ordered the pilot episode for the series in December 2012 , which was written by Michael Lannan and Andrew Haigh . In February 2013 two of the leading roles were cast with actors Jonathan Groff and Frankie J. Alvarez . The station ordered a first season of the series consisting of eight episodes on May 14, 2013. In August 2013, both Scott Bakula and Russell Tovey were hired for recurring guest roles on the series. Filming for the first season began in the San Francisco Bay Area on September 16 and ended just under two months later on November 7, 2013.

At the end of February 2014, HBO ordered a second season of the series, which consists of ten episodes. For the second season, Lauren Weedman , Raúl Castillo and Russell Tovey were included on the main cast.

In March 2015, the series was discontinued after two seasons. However, HBO produced a final television film that was shot in the fall of 2015.

In an interview in January 2014, Michael Lannan and Andrew Haigh stated that seven of the nine scriptwriters were homosexual and that there was a woman among the scriptwriters.

In the United States, the first season aired on HBO between January 19 and March 9, 2014 . The ten episodes of the second season aired between January 11 and March 22, 2015. The final television film was shown in June 2016.

Germany

The German-language premiere was the Pay TV transmitter Sky Atlantic from 10 September 2014. The second season was released on September 9, 2015. The broadcast of the final TV movie was on 14 October 2016. Found in Sky Atlantic.

criticism

At Rotten Tomatoes, the film received a rating of 89% and a user rating of 90%.

The series was praised on the one hand by the Washington Post for freeing itself from the supposed compulsion as a series about gay relationships to deal with stories about the fight for gay rights. On the other hand, the series was simply criticized as being banal and boring.
