Frankie J. Alvarez

Francisco "Frankie" Javier Alvarez is a Cuban-American stage and film actor best known for his role as Agustin on the HBO series Looking .

Earlier life

Alvarez's parents are originally from Cuba , his father from Havana , his mother from Artemisa . He was raised in Miami , Florida. Alvarez came into contact with art and culture at an early age: his grandmother was an opera singer in Cuba, his father was a member of a band in Puerto Rico, his mother was a ballerina, and his three sisters have performed at the Miami City Ballet. Spanish was his first language, and he learned English when he was 7 or 8 years old, supposedly from watching English baseball. He was in a Jesuit preschool. Alvarez was originally enrolled in Florida State University as a Creative Writing major , but applied for the Fine Arts program after a positive experience in the School of Theater. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and moved to New York City and was encouraged by a friend to enroll at the Juilliard School . He used a bilingual version of the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet for his callback and was admitted to the program. He received the Raul Julia Memorial Scholarship.

Personally

Alvarez met his wife, Leah Walsh, as a freshman at Juilliard School. They married in May 2013. Walsh also works as an actress, the couple live in Astoria , Queens , New York .
