True Detective is an American crime series broadcast by HBO and written by Nic Pizzolatto . The first season from 2014 is about two murder investigators in Louisiana and their search for a serial killer . In the first season, Cary Joji Fukunaga directed all episodes. The second season of 2015 also contained a completed story - this time set on the outskirts of the metropolis of Los Angeles .

Development and production

In April 2012, HBO commissioned a first season with eight episodes. The television series creator Nic Pizzolatto wrote the script for all episodes while Cary Joji Fukunaga directed; both are also Executive Producers and Pizzolatto Showrunners . The first season takes place in the coastal plain of southern Louisiana, where it was filmed on 35mm film for almost 100 consecutive days . The leading roles in the first season were played by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson ; Michelle Monaghan , Michael Potts and Tory Kittles took on other leading roles .

In May 2014, screenwriter Nic Pizzolatto announced that it would produce a second season with three leading roles. For this second season, Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn were hired in September 2014 and Taylor Kitsch in October 2014 for leading roles.

The opening credits for the first season were designed by Elastic and directed by Patrick Clair . The opening credits were awarded the Creative Arts Emmy.

The television series uses a format in which each season has a new cast and storyline, commonly known as an anthology series. Comparable anthology series include American Horror Story and Fargo .

The eight-episode first season began airing in the United States on January 12, 2014 on HBO. The German-language premiere took place on April 17, 2014 on Sky Atlantic HD . The second season aired in the United States from June 21 to August 9, 2015 on HBO ; in Germany it ran from September 17 to November 5, 2015 on Sky Atlantic HD.

In July 2016, HBO confirmed the theoretical possibility of a third season, in which Pizzolatto would not be involved as a main screenwriter, but rather in an advisory capacity.

In March 2017 it was announced that Pizzolatto had written the first two episodes of a (potential) third season. In addition, Deadwood -producer David Milch participate in the new season. To cast the third season, Oscar winner Mahershala Ali was presented in the summer of 2017 and Stephen Dorff in January 2018 . The third season was broadcast in the US from January 13th to February 24th, 2019; in Germany it has been shown on Sky Atlantic HD since January 14, 2019.

Episode list

reception

season 1

The first season of True Detective received very positive reviews in English-language media. It has a rating of 84 percent (“Certified Fresh”) by Rotten Tomatoes , with an average rating of 8.5 / 10 based on 64 reviews. At Metacritic , the season has a rating of 87/100 ("Universal acclaim"), based on 41 reviews.

David Wiegand of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote: "The dialogues are eloquent, vivid and provocative, and they do their part to create the horrific mood of the series." Director Cary Joji Fukunaga makes excellent use of the Louisiana locations and gives them the same status in relation to them on the plot like the characters Cohle and Hart. All performances are terrific, but those of McConaughey and Harrelson are in a class of their own. "Robert Lloyd of the Los Angeles Times praised the format of the series:" We're seeing the return of the miniseries , reborn from the eight to 13 hour season arc. Without rushing to the end, there's time for slow, detailed storytelling with plenty of time for conversation and silence. " HitFix's Alan Sepinwall praised the performance and dialogue, writing," The two The main performances are so powerful, the dialogue so startling and the style so intense [...]. "

The German-speaking media also wrote mostly positively about the series. The weekly newspaper Die Zeit praised the television series through Christopher Pramstaller: “ True Detective could become a new model for a kind of author series. Because some stories deserve to be told in such detail. ”The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung described the series as“ the best crime series of the year ”and praised the actors.“ It would have to go with the devil, McConaughey and Harrelson admitted for their roles no prices from ". The Internet portal GIGA wrote that True Detective was “a milestone in the development of film and television” and that it was “reinventing cinema”.

The industry portal Serienjunkies.de awarded the opening episode The Long Bright Dark the highest rating of 5 stars:

“The pilot episode of the HBO drama series True Detective , which was accompanied by great media interest, succeeds almost perfectly in establishing tonality, milieu and characters. Fine irony counteracts the somewhat too thickly applied philosophical excursions. "

- Axel Schmitt : Serienjunkies.de

season 2

The second season was recorded mixed. 63% of the reviews evaluated on Rotten Tomatoes are positive, with an average rating of 6.7 / 10. The critical consensus reads: " True Detectives second season stands on its own two feet as a solid police drama series, with memorable moments and reverberant relationships, compensating for predictable plot twists ." At Metacritic , the season has a rating of 61/100, based on 41 reviews .

Nina Rehfeld describes the second season in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung as “worth seeing” and “top-class cast” right down to the supporting roles. She also writes that the season "is constructed a little more cumbersome than the first [...] and even if the dialogues are a bit weak, the agreement of American critics that none of this does not come close to season one may be premature."

Rolling Stone editor Sean T. Collins particularly criticizes Vaughn's lines of dialogue, which "nobody should have to hear outside of a bad Batman comic or a second-rate Grand Theft Auto copy." In addition, the mystery itself would be far more difficult to unravel on the one hand and far less mysterious on the other. Nevertheless, the season exerts a "strange form of attraction".

season 3

Carolin Ströbe reveals in her review in Die Zeit that for a long time it was unclear whether there would even be a third season and that Pizzolatto himself admitted in his first individual interview in four years that he had simply written an idea and only noticed it on page 40 of the script that it could turn into a true detective again. “A true true detective should be, at least according to the definition of many fans, no less than the great American story about the struggle between tradition and modernity, between faith and reason, between morality and the striving for power. Two police officers whose actions and actions provide information about the state of the United States. Will the new third season live up to this claim? Quite [...] "

Nina Rehfeld (FAZ) also begins her review with a look back at the mixed response to the second season: “You have to take your hat off that HBO has not been discouraged and is now allowing a third season to follow. Program director Michael Lombardo took the blame after the second season. He urged Pizzolatto to hurry instead of giving him the time to develop the story: 'We had a huge success, and I wanted to have it all over again.' [...] 'True Detective 3' tells less of a criminal case than of the search for identity in the American southern states, where racism is so deeply rooted that it is still expressed in seemingly incidental matters. The Einstein word quoted by Ali's character that the past, present and future are only a stubborn illusion is confirmed and yet refuted, not only the fate of the policeman Hays stands for this. "

Influences

In addition to the obvious influences and inspirations of pulp- detective stories, True Detective contains elements and themes from the weird fiction horror genre. This includes direct quotes from Robert W. Chambers ' book The King in Yellow ( The King in Yellow ) from 1895 and lines of dialogue, directly inspired by the cult horror writer Thomas Ligotti . Screenwriter and showrunner, Nic Pizzolatto , confirmed and commented on these influences in an interview with the Wall Street Journal . In the same article, Pizzolatto recommends contemporary horror writers Karl Edward Wagner , Laird Barron , John Langan , Simon Strantzas, and the anthology A Season in Carcosa . Pizzolatto also mentions that he was influenced by the nihilistic philosophies in Confessions of an Antinatalist by Jim Crawford, Nihil Unbound by Ray Brassier , In the Dust of This Planet by Eugene Thacker, and Better Never to Have Been by David Benatar . The Wall Street Journal journalist Michael Calia has published comments and analyzes on this, as has the io9 website . Interest in the connection with Chambers led to the rise of the book The King in Yellow in the top 10 bestsellers on Amazon.com in February 2014. There were also discussions about the possible influence of comic book authors Alan Moore and Grant Morrison on the plot and philosophy of the series, as analyzed by Sam Adams at Indiewire , based on a 2010 quote from Pizzolatto in The Courier-Journal . Director and executive producer Fukunaga has expressed an interest in surrealist filmmaker David Lynch , citing Lynch's Twin Peaks as an influence.
