Cary Fukunaga
Cary Joji Fukunaga (born July 10, 1977 in Oakland , California ) is an American director , screenwriter , cameraman and film producer .
Life
Born in California to a Japanese and a Swede, Fukunaga spent his youth in France, Japan and Mexico. Fukunaga graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz , with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history.
Fukunaga had his breakthrough in 2009 with the film Sin Nombre , which deals with the activities of the Mara Salvatrucha gang . Fukunaga also wrote the script for the film and spent several weeks researching in southern Mexico. The film received two awards at the 25th Sundance Film Festival .
In 2010 he began a new film adaptation of Charlotte Brontë's novel Jane Eyre with Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender in the leading roles. Jane Eyre was shown in American cinemas on March 11, 2011 and in German cinemas on December 1, 2011.
In 2014, Fukunaga directed all episodes of the first season of the HBO television series True Detective and served as executive producer on the series. He won an Emmy in 2014 for his production of the episode Who Goes There .
His war drama Beasts of No Nation, based on a novel by Uzodinma Iweala , starring Idris Elba and Abraham Attah , has been acquired by Netflix . Since Netflix published the film via its subscription service and in theaters at the same time, which eliminated the 90-day evaluation window, the theatrical release of Fukunaga's film was boycotted by the four largest American cinema chains . Beasts of No Nation premiered in competition at the 72nd Venice Film Festival in September 2015 .
For 2015, Fukunaga was planning a remake of Stephen King's It . At the end of May 2015, after differences with the New Line Cinema studio, he left the project three weeks before the planned start of shooting.
In 2018 he directed the miniseries Maniac for Netflix, based on a Norwegian television series , with Emma Stone and Jonah Hill in the leading roles. In September of the same year, Fukunaga was announced as the director of the 25th James Bond film No Time to Die .
