Cheng Pei-pei
Cheng Pei-pei ( Chinese 鄭佩佩 / 郑佩佩 , Pinyin Zhèng Pèipèi , Jyutping Zeng 6 Pui 3 pui 3 , born December 4, 1946 in Shanghai , Republic of China ) is a Chinese actress , known for her roles as a fighter in numerous wuxia films.
Life
Born in Shanghai in 1946 , Cheng started her film career at a young age with Shaw Brothers in Hong Kong . Already at the age of 19 she had her big break in King Hu's wuxia film Come Drink With Me - The Sword of the Yellow Tigress . Hu cast her for the role of Golden Swallow because she had ballet experience as a dancer and was able to master the fight scenes. There were female fighters in Chinese cinema before, but this film reached a new level in that regard. So did Come Drink With Me Cheng virtually overnight star.
In the following years she played in numerous wuxia films and became the most important actress of so-called "Swordswoman" roles in Hong Kong cinema . After their marriage in 1974, Cheng withdrew into private life for long years, which is by no means unusual for female film stars in Hong Kong. She lived in the United States during this time . She has four children; her daughter Eugenia Yuan is also an actress.
In 1986 Cheng returned to film, but mostly played only minor roles. But then she got international attention with the role of Jadefuchs in Tiger and Dragon .
