action

After his partner Kai dies in an accident, Richard visits his mother Junn in the retirement home to come to terms with the loss. Originally from Cambodia, the Chinese woman has lived in Great Britain for forty years, but still does not speak a word of English. When Richard introduces himself as Kai's partner, she first learns of her son's homosexuality. Since she cannot cope with everyday life without communication about her son, Richard takes care of her. But the approach is difficult. Only with the help of the translator Vann is it possible to dispel the misunderstandings between the two. Both sides must recognize that love, sadness and friendship are feelings that do not always need words.

production

The screenplay, originally published under the title Lilting the Past , won third prize in 2011 on the Brit List, a listing of the best previously unrealized British scripts.

At the beginning of 2012, Lilting received the green light from the film production company Microwave as one of three films. A casting call was later launched to cast the three main roles.

Filming began in November 2012 and finished in December. Director Khaou said the film would be visually inspired by Wong Kar-wai's film In the Mood for Love .

During production, Khaou received support from Michael Winterbottom , while producer Buchanan received mentoring from Ken Marshall, the producer from London to Brighton , Filth and Song for Marion . The budget for the film was £ 120,000. It was the studio's first bilingual film.
