action

The story takes place in China around the 4th century AD.

When the Rourans invade the country, one man from each family is called into the military. To protect her sick father, the girl Mulan joins the troops without his knowledge, where she lives every day in fear of being exposed as a woman.

She meets a young officer named Wentai, who by chance discovers that she is a woman. The two develop a relationship. Mulan's exceptional combat and warfare skills help her quickly become known and promoted, with Wentai always by her side. Over the years, Mulan doubts more and more about herself and the meaning of her life, with the war and those who fell from her hand putting a heavy strain on her psyche. However, to protect her father, serve her country and be there for her newfound friends, she remains in the army.

In a battle, Wentai finally dies, which Mulan drops into an even deeper hole, but also frees her and makes her actions independent. Soon Mulan climbs up and becomes a general. But Wentai, who had only faked his death to help her, watches her from a distance. During a campaign, the army led by Mulan is betrayed by allies, and Mulan's life is in danger, whereupon Wentai reveals himself. A sandstorm and many casualties paralyze the army. Mulan manages to get the men to attack.

The enemy Rourans meanwhile take hostages and kill them, including Fei Xiaohu, Mulan's playmate from childhood. Eventually, Wentai reveals himself to be the emperor's son and surrenders to the enemy in exchange for a doctor for Mulan and her army.

Mulan then sneaks into the Rouran camp and allies himself with the princess, who is harassed by her own brother, the prince and war leader. The girl not only wants to lead her people to peace, but also wants to avenge her father, who was murdered by her brother. Together with his slave Gude, the two women carry out an assassination attempt during a festival, which also succeeds. Mulan, who stabs the prince, is badly injured. Wentai, who witnessed the fight, is freed from her.

Mulan begs the emperor's forgiveness for gaining high military positions disguised as a man. Because of her merits, however, she is forgiven and given the opportunity to become the country's supreme general. Mulan decides against it and instead asks to return to her father, which she is allowed to do.

At the decision of the emperor, Wentai is married to the princess of the Rourans in order to consolidate the empire and peace. Shortly thereafter, he visits Mulan, who has returned to her simple life and to her father, and asks her to flee with him and start a new life in a distant land. But Mulan reminds him of his own words that he would give his own life to make peace. He says goodbye forever to Mulan, who stays with her father.
