Paladin (also Paladins: Champions of the Realm ) is a free-to-play - first-person fantasy shooter in the style of a multiplayer online battle arena , which on May 8, 2018 Microsoft Windows , MacOS , PlayStation 4 and Xbox One was officially released. A version for the Nintendo Switch was also released on June 12th .

Gameplay

Paladins is a fantasy first- person shooter in which players compete against each other in 5-on-5 matches in a multiplayer online battle arena with various heroes (also known as "champions"), each with individual special abilities. In order to win the game, it is therefore important to talk to your team about the individual hero classes and how they work together. Text and voice chat are also available for this purpose.

Hero classes

The hero classes are divided into:

  • Front line (tanks) , which are characterized by many protective capabilities and a high health pool and are therefore well suited for covering the team,
  • Classes with high damage to the enemy ( damage ), but only an average health pool, which are good for corresponding battles,
  • supporting characters ( support / support ) who have healing abilities and can thus help the allies better in battle, and
  • Flanks , which both do a lot of damage and are fast, and are therefore well suited to traversing the battlefield and entering enemy lines. However, they usually have very little health.

Each champion has a weapon, four skills and one ultimate skill. There are currently 45 champions.

Game modes

The game offers four game modes . These are:

  • Siege (Siege) : In this mode, two teams compete against each other in order to conquer the central capture point on the map. In the next phase a cargo has to be escorted into the enemy base while the opposing team tries to prevent this until the time runs out. The team that wins here receives one point for each phase. The team that has 4 points first wins.
  • Onslaught (Offensive) : Teams fight across a large combat area to earn points. In addition to occupying a control point, killing opposing players also earns points for the team, similar to team deathmatch. Killing an enemy gives the team 5 points, while control of the combat area gives the team 1 point per second. The first team to reach 400 points first or the team with the most points after 10 minutes wins the game.
  • King of the Hill: This game mode is part of the Onslaught Queue and works similarly to this one. However, the teams fight for a small control point that changes location every 90 seconds, killing an enemy only earns the team 3 points and the team with the most points wins after 15 minutes.
  • Team Deathmatch: Two teams play against each other and the team that reaches 40 kills first wins.

In-game currency

The game has three currencies of its own. How to get Battle Pass XP for daily quests or achievements in the game; Crystals for purchase with real money and gold , for example for leveling up, daily visits, quests or playing individual matches. The currencies can be used to purchase special items in the game, for example.

Paladins is often compared to Overwatch . The Chief Operating Officer Todd Harris of Hi-Rez but indicates that Overwatch had not been the inspiration for the game and you look more like Team Fortress 2 oriented. Compared to Overwatch, Paladins places more value on the classic MOBA set of rules, relies on other heroes, some of which have to be unlocked first, offers other game modes and a special set of maps and is Free 2 Play.

The loot boxes introduced in the game by an update , which could make the game too much pay to win , were criticized by players . The game also received these allegations when it introduced a new in-game currency in a beta patch.
