Realm Royale is a free-to-play - Battle Royale - third-person shooter from the year 2018, the game on the Paladin is based and from the American US development studio Hi-Rez Studios has been released. The game was also called Paladins: Battlegrounds .

Gameplay

The game is played in a similar way to other battle royale games, in which the player, after jumping off a zeppelin and landing in the world, has to equip himself with weapons and other items in order to be able to fight against opponents. The play area is getting smaller and smaller and the players have to move to an area marked on the map, otherwise they will be damaged. Before that, there is a preparation time that shows you when the play area will be reduced and where the new play area will be. The time display then shows how long it will take until the new play area has been delimited.

The game contains five character classes with different skills. These are: warrior, hunter, mage, engineer and assassin. The warrior can activate a shield, has a jump attack and fights with assault rifles and shotguns . The magician has special spells and the hunter has a bow or crossbow . The engineer can deploy guns and shields, and the assassin can use teleport skills and a sniper rifle . Only 4 of these classes are currently implemented on the Nintendo Switch , the engineer is missing.

You can play alone, in pairs or as a group. A crafting system allows found objects to be dismantled for materials in order to find better objects or skills in fixed locations on the map, the forges. However, these are often visited by many other players and can therefore be dangerous for the player. The player can use a horse for locomotion. Players who have been defeated by other players will turn into a chicken and can be turned back if they manage to dodge attacks for a period of time and survive. There are currently 17 weapons and 25 skills available.

Development and publication

The game is developed and marketed by Hi-Rez Studios, which are known for multiplayer online battle arena games such as Smite and Paladins .

Initially, the game was intended as a separate game mode for the game Paladins , but was later developed into its own offshoot, which was initially called Paladins: Battlegrounds and is now called Realm Royale . The game was part of the Steam - Early Access -Programms on June 5, 2018 for free for Windows released. A version for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One was also released. Since this is a beta, more features will be added as updates .

Due to the graphics and the game principle, such as the character class system, Realm Royale is also compared with Fortnite , Overwatch and the massively multiplayer online role-playing game World of Warcraft . Many critics are also of the opinion that, in contrast to Fortnite , the many and hectic construction functions are not overwhelmed and the game is overall faster than in PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and other comparable titles. Furthermore, the combination of multiplayer online battle arena or hero shooter and battle royale is praised. Among other things, the lack of adjustment functions and the lack of long-term motivation due to the manageable map are criticized .

More than 100,000 players played the game in the first week after its launch on Steam , making it the fourth most played game on Steam. The game gained fame among other things through live streams on sites like Twitch . After three weeks the game had reached over 3 million players and was the number one most watched game on Twitch and Mixer .
