Mixer was a Seattle- based live streaming platform owned by Microsoft . The service officially started on January 5, 2016 under the name Beam, but was renamed Mixer in May 2017. The service focuses on interactivity. Mixer has a market share of 3.2%.

history

Beam launched on January 5, 2016. In May 2016, Beam won the startup competition at the TechCrunch Disrupt Conference for $ 50,000.

On August 11, 2016, Beam was acquired by Microsoft for an undisclosed amount. The service team has been integrated into the Xbox department. On October 26, 2016, Microsoft announced that Beam would be integrated into Windows 10 . Beam Broadcasting was also integrated into the Xbox One with the software update from March 2017 .

On May 25, 2017, Microsoft announced that Beam would be renamed Mixer because the previous name could not be used worldwide. At the same time as the re-branding, several new functions were added, such as B. the possibility for a user to host up to three additional streams simultaneously on his channel, as well as the associated mobile app Mixer Create .

On August 1, 2019, the streamer Ninja announced that it would exclusively switch from Amazon competitor Twitch to Mixer from August 2 , which was considered a big coup for Mixer. Ninja, who has over 14.5 million followers, was one of Twitch's top personalities. In October 2019, the two founders, Boehm and Salsamendi, left Microsoft. On October 24, 2019, it was announced that Shroud , a major Twitch streamer, would switch to Mixer. Shroud had 7.1 million followers on Twitch. On October 27, 2019, KingGothalion, another major Twitch streamer, announced that it would switch to Mixer. FaZe.Ewok, a 14-year-old Twitch streamer, announced on November 14, 2019 that she would be joining Mixer.

On June 22, 2020, Mixer announced that they would merge with Facebook Gaming.

On July 23, 2020, 8 p.m. CEST, Mixer stopped streaming.

properties

Mixer differs from other streaming platforms in that it emphasizes the interactivity between streamers and their viewers. Viewers are enabled to perform actions that can influence a stream (e.g. voting or influencing gameplay). These functions can be used via a button next to the stream.

The service advocated that there would be less than a second between when it was sent and when it was received by users.

Mixer is also integrated in the Xbox app.
