Xbox is an app from Microsoft for managing computer games on Xbox 360 , Xbox One and Windows . It is also available as a mobile app for Android and iOS .

Functions

The most important functions of the app include:

  • The management of games that u. a. in the Microsoft Store or Steam , as well as their download management
  • Community functions, such as managing profiles and friends, using chats and creating an observation feed
  • a virtual remote control for the Xbox console
  • the appearance of a second screen for some apps and games on the Xbox console
  • the streaming of console image on the device with the app installed
  • access to Xbox Live and Xbox Game Pass
  • the recording and live streaming of game content on Microsoft's Mixer platform .
  • An overview menu (overlay) in Windows games for basic functions such as volume control, hardware utilization overview, recording options (e.g. screencast ) or friend management (Xbox Game Bar)

Xbox 360 SmartGlass was first announced for Windows 8 , Android and iOS at E3 2012 and should make Xbox 360 easier to manage. With the release of the Xbox One in November 2013, Microsoft released an accompanying Xbox One SmartGlass app for Android, iOS, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone , which added more extensive functions for controlling the console.

With the release of Windows 10 , a revised app called Xbox appeared , which expanded the management of PC games in particular and offers the option of streaming games from an Xbox One console in a local network . On June 12, 2016, the mobile versions of the Xbox One Smartglass apps were updated and renamed Xbox . Xbox 360 SmartGlass was not updated and was discontinued in May 2018. On June 1, 2017, the paid game subscription Xbox Game Pass for Xbox One games was launched.

The mobile apps were updated together with the firmware update for the Xbox One in May 2019 and show friends across platforms.

On June 9, 2019, at the same time as Microsoft's press conference at E3 2019, Microsoft released a new Xbox app in beta version exclusively for Windows 10. The beta version has a redesigned user interface and serves as a client for the Newly launched PC game subscription service Xbox Game Pass PC , which also includes some games that are in the Xbox Game Pass catalog for Xbox One. The PC version of the Game Pass was announced in May with over 100 games. After the beta phase, the service will cost € 10 per month. Prior to the conference, Microsoft renamed the existing Xbox app on Windows 10 as the Xbox Console Companion .
