Xbox Game Pass is a subscription Service of Microsoft for video games and can with the Xbox One and Windows 10 are used. As part of Microsoft's press conference for E3 2017, Microsoft announced that selected Xbox titles will be made available via a new backward-compatible feature, similar to that for Xbox 360 titles. In a later interview, Phil Spencer stated that some of these games could find their way to Game Pass as well.

On January 23, 2018, Microsoft announced an expansion to Game Pass that would see first-party titles appearing in retail stores on the game's catalog entry day. Sea of ​​Thieves was the first new title released on Game Pass on March 20, 2018. Crackdown 3 , State of Decay 2, and Forza Horizon 4 would also be added at launch, though their launch dates have not yet been announced at this point, and future versions in existing Microsoft franchises, such as Halo and Gears of War , would also be added when they launch to be added. The Xbox Game Pass is similar to the existing EA Access video game subscription and the PlayStation Now service from competitor Sony . The subscription catalog contains more than 100 games at launch, with games being added and sometimes withdrawn from the catalog from time to time. Xbox Game Pass allows the player to download the complete game to the console; According to Xbox director Phil Spencer , this was done in order to give players "continuous, faithful gameplay without worrying about streaming, bandwidth or connectivity issues." The catalog contains select games for Xbox One and select Xbox 360 and Xbox titles that Xbox One is backward compatible with . As long as a game remains in the catalog, it is available to subscribers for unlimited download and play. Players can purchase games in the catalog at a 20% discount and all related additional content for these games at a 10% discount. The reduced price is only available in the catalog during the game and is only valid for the respective game; For comparison, the EA Access 10% subscriber discount applies to all content published by EA, not just to content in the subscription catalog. Games from the catalog can be played while the console is offline, but no longer than 30 days before it has to reconnect to verify an active subscription .

If the game is removed from the catalog or the player unsubscribes, access will be blocked until the player purchases the game or renews their subscription, but their progress in the game is saved in the meantime. If the game is an Xbox 360 title, it is backwards compatible and must be used on Xbox One; it cannot be downloaded to a player's Xbox 360 console unless the player chooses to purchase it.
