State of Decay 2 is a survival horror - computer game from the year 2018 and the successor State of Decay .

Gameplay

State of Decay 2 is a survival horror game that in the third-person perspective is played and, as in previous times in a zombie - apocalypse is located.

The game is played in an open game world and the player can play in co-op mode with up to three other players. The player takes care of a small community of several survivors and establishes a base at the beginning of the game to hoard food, medicines, ammunition, materials and fuel. The individual missions are limited to the extermination of zombie hordes or the procurement of certain resources. There are several melee and ranged weapons and aids available to the player. The player can get around on foot or by using a car.

Furthermore, the player must take care of basic needs such as sleep, nutrition and health and keep an eye on the morale of the survivors. There is no option to pause the game. In the base, the player can change his character, each of these characters having their own characteristics and properties. The player can trade with individual enclaves , take orders for them or win new members for his group.

The base management enables the player to set up medical wards, produce medicines and work in workshops ( crafting ). Successes give the player influence points that can be used to expand the base or outpost. A total of three cards are available.

Development and publication

State of Decay 2 is developed by Undead Labs and marketed by Microsoft Studios . The game is developed with the game engine Unreal Engine 4 .

The game was originally supposed to be released in 2017. At the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3 for short) 2017, however, it was announced that the game should not appear until spring 2018. It was finally released on May 22, 2018 for Microsoft Windows 10 and Xbox One . A cross play between Windows and Xbox users is possible.

Versions and extensions

In addition to the standard version, the Ultimate version also contains the Xbox One version of its predecessor State of Decay: Year One Survival Edition as well as the Independence and Dawn package.

The Collector's Edition does not contain the game, but does contain a zombie mask and other collectibles.

Micro transactions are not planned, but there should be downloadable content . There is currently no German language version and the translation is limited to the screen texts.

In July 2018 the first DLC entitled Independence Day was released , which expanded the game with a few items. The DLC Daybreak appeared about a month later and expanded the game to include a horde mode, as well as new items, opponents, rewards and achievements . In June 2019, the DLC Heartland was released, which expands the game with a story campaign. It tells the story of two couples who survived the zombie apocalypse. The Trumbull Valley map from the first part is also playable again. Furthermore, new opponents, NPCs, facilities and achievements were added.

The game received mixed ratings.

Among other things, the mix of zombie hunting and base building who are praised RPG elements , magnet and interact with other people, the thrill and horror factor in Plünderungstouren which mainly occurs at night and the new co-op mode in the game.

Criticisms include game errors, the outdated graphics, the quickly forgotten story, little variety in terms of the game world, the gameplay and the level of detail in the game, as well as few innovations to already known concepts and predecessors, which can lead to long-term motivation being reduced .
