Lists on the subject |
The Standschützen Hellriegel M1915 or machine gun of the Standschützen Hellriegel was an experimental weapon of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy during the First World War . The only sources available on this weapon are some photos (dated October 1915) that have been preserved from an Austrian picture archive. Therefore, most of the information about the history and construction of the weapon can only be guessed at. From this one can conclude that the weapon was not very reliable because otherwise it would have been further developed and more would have been known about it. The name of the weapon probably refers to a soldier of the Imperial and Royal Standschützen who could have developed it.
The Hellriegel M1915 was probably an early attempt to develop a submachine gun . The photos show that the gun is loaded with pistol ammunition. The weapon was probably set up for the 9 mm Steyr cartridge because it was the standard pistol ammunition of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy during the First World War. Or maybe a different or even a newly developed cartridge was used. Almost certainly the weapon was set up for continuous fire , which would explain the large magazine capacity of the drum magazines used . The Hellriegel M1915 was water-cooled . Similar to the heavy machine guns from this period (e.g. MG 08 , Schwarzlose machine gun , PM 1910 , Vickers machine gun , Mg 11 , Browning M1917 ), the gun was equipped with a cooling jacket around the barrel , which was filled with cooling water . It is very likely that the submachine gun was equipped with an unlocked ground lock. The weapon could be loaded with drum magazines or rod magazines . The magazine capacity was probably around 160 or 20 cartridges. Apparently the drum magazine could not be attached to the weapon at this stage of development. The concept of the Hellriegel M1915 corresponds to that of the German MG 08/15 . This concept should make it possible to develop an automatic weapon that can be carried by a single person . In one of the photos, an assistant to the rifleman can be seen carrying additional drum magazines in a kind of backpack on his back, which was common for ammunition carriers during the First World War to transport additional magazines for automatic weapons.
Modern reception
The Hellriegel M1915 was best known for its use in the first-person shooter game Battlefield 1 .
