Scott Avedisian

Scott Avedisian (* 1965 in Warwick , Rhode Island ) is an American former politician ( Republican Party ). He served as Mayor of Warwick, Rhode Island from 2000 to 2018, the longest tenure in the city's history. Since 2018 he has been the Chief Executive Officer of the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority .

Life

Avedisian attended public schools in Warwick and Washington, DC He studied at Providence College , where he received a bachelor's degree , and Roger Williams University in Bristol , Rhode Island, where he received a master's degree in public administration . He also completed programs at Harvard Kennedy School .

As of 1990, Avedisian was elected as a Republican five times for first constituency in the Warwick City Council . After the previous Mayor Lincoln Chafee was appointed by Governor Lincoln Almond on November 2, 1999 to take the vacant seat of his late father John Chafee in the US Senate , Avedisian was nominated by his party as a candidate in the February 2000 by-election. In this he was able to prevail with 59% to 29% of the votes cast against Gerald T. Gibbons , who had held the office of mayor as Council President since May 1999. Avedisian also won the next regular mayoral election in November 2000. In total, he was elected mayor eight more times, most recently in 2016.

In May 2018, Avedisian resigned from mayor to become Chief Executive Officer of the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority . The previous Council President Joseph J. Solomon became the new mayor . Since the next regular mayoral election was scheduled for November of the same year, unlike in 2000, no special by-election was necessary this time. Solomon was confirmed in office in November with 60% to 39.7% of the votes cast.

Avedisian was also President of the Rhode Island League of Cities and Towns and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority.

The New England Institute of Technology in Warwick awarded him an honorary doctorate .
