Donald L. "Don" Carcieri (born December 16, 1942 in East Greenwich , Rhode Island ) is an American politician . Carcieri was 2003-2011 Governor of the State of Rhode Iceland. He belongs to the Republicans and is assigned to the moderate wing there.

Life

Carcieri studied International Relations at Brown University in Providence . He was then initially a math teacher at a high school and later in a managerial position at Old Stone Bank and the management of the Cookson Group .

As governor

On January 7, 2003, Carcieri took over the office of governor of Rhode Island after he had prevailed in the elections with 54:45 percent of the vote against the Democratic State Senator Myrth York . In 2006, with a share of 50.9 percent, he just succeeded in being re-elected against his lieutenant governor Charles J. Fogarty . Carcieri ruled against a House of Representatives dominated by the Democratic Party in a ratio of 60:15 seats , which led to a number of political differences between the governor and parliament during his tenure. In 2005 he vetoed the legalization of cannabis as medicine, but this was later overruled.

On January 4, 2011, Carcieri constitutionally resigned from office, which he handed over to the Independent Lincoln Chafee .
