Augustus Osborn Bourn (born October 1, 1834 in Providence , Rhode Island , †  January 28, 1925 ) was an American politician and governor of the state of Rhode Island from 1883 to 1885 .

Early years

After elementary school, Augustus Bourn attended Brown University . He then worked in his father's rubber factory, which he later took over after his father's death and renamed the Providence Rubber Company . A rubber factory he had founded in Bristol in the meantime was incorporated into this company. Augustus Bourn was also a member of his state's militia, where he made it to lieutenant colonel in the cavalry .

Political career

Augustus Bourn was a member of the Republican Party . He represented Bristol on the State Senate for seven years . In 1883 he was elected as his party's candidate for governor of his state. After re-election in 1884, he was able to exercise this office between May 29, 1883 and May 26, 1885. During this time, the state constitution was expanded to include an additional article which gave the newly naturalized compatriots the right to vote. After his governorship ended, Bourn served four years as the American consul in Italy .

After the end of his political career, Augustus Bourn returned to his private and business affairs. He died in January 1925 at the age of 90. He had five children with his wife, Elizabeth Roberts Morrill.
