Edward D. DiPrete

Edward Daniel DiPrete (born July 8, 1934 in Cranston , Rhode Island ) is a former American politician . He was governor of the state of Rhode Island from 1985 to 1991 .

Early years and political advancement

Edward DiPrete graduated from the College of the Holy Cross and then served in the U.S. Navy . Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . Between 1970 and 1974 he was a member and chairman of the Cranston City School Committee. He then became a member of the city council from 1974 to 1978 and mayor of this place from 1978 to 1985.

Governor of Rhode Island and additional résumé

In 1984 DiPrete was elected the new governor of his state. He held this office between January 1, 1985 and January 1, 1991. During this time he was a member of several governors' associations. Investigations in the years following his governorship brought DiPrete to 1994 charges of bribery and other offenses during his tenure. In 1998, he pleaded guilty to accepting $ 250,000 for an assignment. He was sentenced to one year in prison and has his pension withdrawn. Edward DiPrete is married to Patricia DiPrete, with whom he has seven children.
