William C. Cozzens

William Cole Cozzens (born August 26, 1811 in Newport , Rhode Island , †  December 17, 1876 ibid) was an American politician and in 1863 governor of the state of Rhode Island.

Career

William Cozzens was a successful Rhode Island businessman who later became President of the Rhode Island Union Bank . He belonged to the Democratic Party and was mayor of Newport for several years. He was both a member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives and a member of the State Senate . In 1863 he was president of this body. After the resignation of Governor William Sprague , who moved to the US Senate , and with the simultaneous vacancy of the post of lieutenant governor , Cozzens had to end Sprague's remaining term between March 3 and May 26, 1863 in accordance with the state constitution. An independent candidacy for this office was then unsuccessful. William Cozzens was married to Martha Stanton Gould, with whom he had five children.
