Gina Marie Raimondo (* 17th May 1971 in Smithfield , Rhode Iceland ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party and, since January 2015 Governor of Rhode Iceland.

Gina Raimondo was born in Smithfield, the youngest of three children of Joseph and Josephine Raimondo. Your grandparents are from Italy . She grew up in a working class family; her father worked in a watch factory in Providence before he lost his job after around 30 years and the family had to live on the small pension.

In the early 1980s she was one of the first girls to graduate from the Catholic La Salle Academy in Providence, which was previously only attended by boys . With magna cum laude , she received her Bachelor in Economics from Harvard University in 1993 . With the help of a Rhodes scholarship , she studied at the University of Oxford in England , where she obtained a doctorate in sociology . Most recently, she received her doctorate in law from Yale University in 1998 .

At Yale, she also met her husband Andrew, whom she married in November 2001. She has two children with him.

She began her professional career as a member of the staff of US Federal Judge Kimba Wood in New York City . After that, she was a founding member and vice president of the company Village Ventures , based in Williamstown ( Massachusetts ). The company's goal was to invest money in new emerging businesses.

When she returned to Rhode Island in 2000, Raimondo started Point Judith Capital , another venture capital firm.

In 2010, Raimondo was elected State Treasurer of Rhode Island, her first political mandate. Another four years later, in 2014, she ran for governor of Rhode Island, an election she won against Allan Fung , Mayor of Cranston . On January 6, 2015, she was sworn in as the new governor.

Gina Raimondo is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations , among other things .
