East Greenwich is a city and the county seat of Kent County , Rhode Island , United States . It is the wealthiest city in Rhode Island.
geography
The city is located directly west of Narragansett Bay on the southern edge of the Providence Metropolitan Area , a metropolitan area on the Atlantic coast with 1.5 million inhabitants around Providence , about 40 km southwest of Boston and 200 km northeast of New York . It is well connected to road traffic, in addition to some state routes in and around the city, Interstate 95 runs past it immediately to the north.
In the north of the city the dense development of the metropolitan area begins, its southern and western environs are largely densely forested, although numerous settlements in the immediate western area of East Greenwich break through the forest. With the bay of the Maskerchugg River, the city has a natural harbor.

The 2000 census counted 12,948 inhabitants. Of these, almost 96% were white and 2.5% were Asian . The per capita income was $ 38,593; 4.7% of the population lived below the poverty line .
history
The land of the later city was originally inhabited by the Pequot . Charles II acquired the land for the British crown in 1644. The city of East Greenwich was founded in 1677 and named after Greenwich , England . Until 1854, East Greenwich was one of the five capital cities of Rhode Island. The General Assembly, which met in East Greenwich, used the local courthouse, which is now the City Hall.
In 1775, with the dispatch of two armed ships, one of the earliest American official detachments of ships was created in East Greenwich to protect the waters around New England and to capture enemy ships. This administrative act of the American Congress is seen as the birth of the United States Navy .
