Charles J. Fogarty

Charles Joseph Fogarty Jr. (born September 15, 1955 in Providence , Rhode Island ) is an American politician . Between 1999 and 2007 he was Lieutenant Governor of the State of Rhode Island.

Career

Charles Fogarty comes from a well-known family of politicians. His father Charles and brother Paul were or are state senators in Rhode Island. His uncle John E. Fogarty (1913-1967) sat in the United States House of Representatives from 1941 to 1967 . He graduated from LaSalle Academy , Providence College, and the University of Rhode Island . He then devoted himself to politics as a member of the Democratic Party . From 1985 to 1991 he was a member of the Glocester City Council . Between 1990 and 1998 he sat in the Senate of Rhode Island, whose incumbent President ( President Pro Tempore ) he was from 1995 to 1998.

In 1998, Fogarty was elected Lieutenant Governor of Rhode Island alongside Lincoln Almond . He held this office after a re-election between 1999 and 2007. He was Deputy Governor and formal Chairman of the State Senate. Since 2003 he served under the new Governor Donald Carcieri , who like his predecessor Almond was a Republican . In 2006, a further re-election was not possible for constitutional reasons. Therefore Fogarty ran, albeit unsuccessfully, for the office of governor. Since 1996 he has participated as a delegate at all Democratic National Conventions . In 2004 he became a member of the national executive committee of his party. Since 2011, Fogarty Minister of Labor and Education ( Labor and Training ) of his state.
