Career

Constant Taber grew up during the British colonial era. He must also have studied law because he later worked as a judge. Between 1778 and 1786 he was employed by the Connecticut Court of Common Pleas (clerk of Ct. Of Common Pleas). From 1791 he was a judge there. Between 1793 and 1801 he was Chief Justice presiding judge of that court. He was then from 1801 Navy Agent for the federal government under President Thomas Jefferson . He moved to Newport , Rhode Island and turned to politics. Between 1802 and 1805 Taber was a member and president of the State House of Representatives . In the presidential election of 1804 he was one of four electors from Rhode Island. Since this state fell to the nationwide defeated candidate Charles Cotesworth Pinckney , one can conclude that Taber was a member or supporter of his Federalist party . In 1807 and 1808 he was at the side of James Fenner Lieutenant Governor of Rhode Island. He acted as Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . Between 1808 and 1811 he was Treasurer General of Rhode Island. Then he was President of Newport Bank. He died on December 20, 1826.
