Edward Wilcox
Edward Wilcox (* 1751 in Charlestown , Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations , † September 7, 1838 in Quonochontaug , Rhode Island) was an American politician . Between 1817 and 1821 he was Lieutenant Governor of Rhode Island.
Career
Edward Wilcox was a distinguished home merchant and major in the Washington County militia from 1795 to 1800 . Between 1794 and 1823 he sat several times in the Rhode Island General Assembly . The sources do not mention which chamber he belonged there. He was one of four electors from Rhode Island in the presidential election of 18616 . Since this state fell to the defeated candidate Rufus King of the Federalist Party at the time , it can be assumed that Wilcox was also a member of this party.
Between 1816 and 1821, Wilcox served with Nehemiah R. Knight as Lieutenant Governor of Rhode Island. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . When Knight was elected to the US Senate in a by - election, Wilcox was acting governor of his state for a few days. But that was so insignificant that he is not included in the official lists of governors. After that, he no longer appeared politically. Between 1823 and 1833 he was President of Phenix Bank . He died on September 7, 1838 in the small village of Quonochontaug and was buried in his hometown of Charlestown.

Remarks
- ↑ According to The Political Graveyard, he was born on July 5, 1783. But that cannot be true, since he was elected to the state legislature in 1794 and would have been only eleven years old.
