Gerald T. Gibbons

Gerald T. Gibbons (born July 30, 1934 in Rhode Island , † January 20, 2007 ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) and from 1999 to 2000 mayor of Warwick , Rhode Island.

Life

Gibbons grew up with four sisters and two brothers in Warwick, Rhode Island. He attended Aldrich High School and graduated there in 1952. From 1952 to 1955 he was a member of the United States Navy and served on the USS Putnam (DD-757) . He later completed professional development courses at Bryant College , the University of Rhode Island and Northeastern University . Gibbons worked for the City of Warwick as a purchasing clerk for 17 years.

Gibbons was elected as a Democrat five times for a second constituency in Warwick City Council . He was elected Council President three times in the city council . As such, he took over the vacant office of mayor of the city in 1999 after the previous incumbent Lincoln Chafee was appointed on November 2 by Governor Lincoln Almond to take the vacant seat of his late father John Chafee in the US Senate . In the February 2000 by-election for the office of mayor, Gibbons was defeated by his Republican opponent Scott Avedisian with 29% to 59% of the votes.

Gibbons was married and had two sons.
