Killer Instinct is a three-part video game series from the fighting game genre. The first part was published in 1994 as an arcade version based on the Ultra 64 hardware and ported to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System a year later . "Killer Instinct 2" followed in 1996, also initially as an arcade title, later under the title "Killer Instinct Gold" for the Nintendo 64 console . During the Xbox press conference at E3 on June 10, 2013, Killer Instinct was announced for the Xbox One. It was released in Europe on October 10, 2013.

General

The games were developed with computers from SGI and 3D rendering software from Alias . Especially the first part impressed with its brute graphics and its fast and fluid game speed. The massive use of animated sprites created the illusion of a 3D graphic rendered in real time , which at that time was not yet possible in terms of computing power. Another highlight was the elaborate “ combo system ” (combination system), with which the player could execute special attacks of the respective character by means of given key combinations.

Killer instinct

action

Ultratech is a powerful global corporation whose employees one day discover an alien (Glacius) that has fallen to earth. Its technology is stolen and a tournament called the Killer Instinct is organized. Ultratech has also discovered a technology that allows jumps between dimensions and uses it to free Eyedol, an ancient and god-like warlord.

Characters

The game contains ten characters:

  • Iago: a Tibetan monk who follows the spirit of the tiger. He sees it as his destiny to destroy Ultratech.
  • TJ Combo: Fighter from Ultratech. He was excluded from the boxing federations because he had bio-mechanical arms. He was promised that if he won the tournament he would get his title back.
  • Spinal: servant of Ultratech. It is the product of cell regeneration, a living skeleton.
  • Chief Thunder: Indian chief armed with a tomahawk . He enters the tournament to find his missing brother.
  • Glacius: An alien promised peace and quiet should he win the tournament.
  • Fulgore: A cyborg developed by Ultratech to serve as a prototype for future robots .
  • Cinder: Criminal who was taken out of prison by Ultratech as a test object for chemical weapons. An accident during an experiment turned him into a living flame. Cinder takes part in the combat championship to get revenge on Ultratech.
  • Sabrewulf: A werewolf who was promised a cure if he killed Glacius at the tournament.
  • Orchid: A spy who disguised herself as a secretary at Ultratech.
  • Riptor: A hybrid of a reptile and a human produced by genetics. The tournament is intended to test his skills.
  • Eyedol: Two- headed, ancient and mystical warlord who was trapped in a prison in another dimension. Ultratech freed him to use him as the last opponent in the tournament.

Killer Instinct 2 / Killer Instinct Gold

action

In the final battle of the first part, Orchid killed Eyedol and accidentally triggered a time leap through which the surviving fighters were transported 2000 years into the past. This leap in time also freed the demon Gargos, who now seeks to rule. In the past, the famous fighters met Gargos and other enemies from different cultures. This time the different characters are pursuing their personal goals. If one only wants to go back to his time, others strive for power or the destruction of evil.

Game flow

Killer Instinct was best known for its complex combo system, because it was the first fighting game that contained such a series of kicks and punches, in the sense that combos could be started systematically. There were 3 classes of movements: introduction, connection, finisher. With the connecting movements, hits from the entries could be strung together, with the finisher the combo could then be effectively ended. With the so-called Ultras you could beat an opponent - who had little energy left - to death. The Ultras contained a combination of sometimes more than 40 kicks and punches. Furthermore, towards the end of the fight, as with the fighting game veteran Mortal Kombat , it was possible to "execute" the opponent by performing a fatality. Each character had two individual finishing moves and it was universally possible in some stages to push the opponent over the edge of a deep abyss. Alternatively, one could also make the opponent look ridiculous with a "humiliation" move.

In addition to the combo system, there was another important difference to other fighting games: If the life energy of one of the opponents drops to 0, it is increased again for the second round, which begins immediately. However, the opponent may continue to fight with his previous energy. In other games, both players usually start the second round with a full health bar.

Sockets for consoles

Both Killer Instinct (SNES) and Killer Instinct Gold (N64) were only released as heavily stripped-down versions. This was necessary because both consoles were technically not able to play the games in their original version. The SNES version of Killer Instinct was originally supposed to be released for the N64 (it will be advertised on the arcade machine at the beginning), but it never was. As a result, the SNES version had to be adapted particularly strongly for the console. The indexing of the first part, which had existed since 1996, was lifted in June 2016.
