Dead by Daylight ( dbD ) is a by Behavior Interactive developed, asymmetric Survival Horror - video game , which on 14 June 2016, Starbreeze Studios for Windows was released. On June 23, 2017 a version for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 was released , the version for the Nintendo Switch was released on September 24, 2019 and versions for Android and iOS on April 17, 2020. The game has also been available for purchase in the Microsoft Store since October 31, 2019 and can be played with the Xbox Game Pass .

On January 1, 2018, Starbreeze Studios handed over the rights to the game to Behavior Interactive for sixteen million US dollars , i.e. more than 14 million euros.

Gameplay

Dead by Daylight is a multiplayer - action game in which a killer four survivors coursing through a map. The survivors, on the other hand, have to flee from the killer and escape from the area. The players take on the roles of killers and survivors. The game ends when all players are dead or have fled. The survivors play in the third-person perspective , while the killer plays in the first-person perspective . The players also get a visualization of the source of loud noises. The game world is structured procedurally and is based on one of seven game world templates which define the atmosphere, ambient elements and general lighting. Which of these templates is used for the round is random. The probabilities for these templates can be influenced by certain offerings, which can be selected in the player's inventory before the start of the game, but are destroyed after one use, so that the round is more likely to take place in a game world based on the presentation of the offering.

Survivors

The goal of the survivors is to escape from the game world. There are three ways to escape: by repairing at least a certain number of generators (usually the number of generators is one higher than the number of survivors playing). Then the survivors can open an exit gate or two and flee. If there is only one survivor left in the game, a trapdoor will also open through which he can escape. As soon as this trapdoor appears, you can open it (if it is still locked because too many players are still alive) with a key (item) so that several survivors can escape through it. With the new update "Endgame Collapse", killers can now close the trap door, which automatically supplies the exit gates with energy and initiates the end phase. The number of generators that have to be repaired for the escape possibilities is determined at the beginning of the game based on the number of players and is no longer changed. The survivors, who can also sprint, run or sneak, have to hide in the dark, crouching behind objects, in buildings, in bushes or inside cupboards. If you are in the vicinity of the killer (so-called terror radius), you will hear heart palpitations and music, which are louder the closer the killer is. In addition, you can find items in boxes scattered around the game world . For example, a map shows the locations of the generators or a toolbox enables them to be repaired more quickly. Leaning stacks of boards distributed in the game world can be knocked over during the escape in order to block the way. If the stack of boards is knocked over while the killer is under it, the killer will be stunned for a brief moment. Such obstacles can be jumped over by survivors such as window frames after they have been used, but the killer has to destroy them in order to be able to pass the path again.

Each of the 22 different playable survivors can advance to level 50 in a level system and can unlock items, add-ons for the items, offerings and perks (skills). These can be activated or deactivated before the game starts. For the activation, so-called blood points are required, which can be collected through various actions in the game. Such actions are e.g. B. repairing generators, unhooking other survivors or running away from the killer.

killer

The killer's goal is to kill all survivors. When he finds a survivor, he has to hit them twice with his weapon. With the first blow he wounds him, with the second blow he goes down. A survivor lying on the ground can move very slowly and slowly bleeds to death until he dies, is healed, or is picked up by the killer. The killer can also catch the survivors directly if he catches them inside cupboards, working on the generator, or jumping over an obstacle. Once the killer has captured a survivor, he can carry him to one of the many hooks while the survivor tries to stomp free. If the trampling is successful or if the killer is stunned by an overturned pile of boards, the survivor jumps off, whereupon the killer has to pursue again. The hooks to which the survivor is brought hang on gallows-like scaffolding and are distributed all over the game world. The killer can hang a captured survivor on one of these hooks. The victim on the hook has a life bar that slowly empties. If this life bar is below 50%, the struggle mode begins ; the victim has to keep pressing the spacebar or dies instantly. A survivor can be released from the hook by other survivors. Alternatively, he can try to free himself, which rarely succeeds and is only possible if the struggle mode has not yet started. Unsuccessful escape and rescue attempts shorten the life bar. A teammate of the survivor can save him during this time and sees the outline of the person hanging up through objects and over any distance. The victim on the hook also sees the outline of all the other survivors. If the victim is rescued and hung up again, struggle mode begins immediately. If the victim is rescued from the hook during strugglens, they will die immediately if they are hung up again. Survivors who die on the hook are sacrificed in this way to a spider-like being called an Entitus .

The killer cannot run or sneak, but he generally runs at a faster pace than the survivors. To do this, the survivors can jump over stacks of boards that have been overturned and through window frames, while the killer can only climb slowly through the window frames and has to destroy stacks of boards. Sprinting survivors also leave traces that the killer can perceive as glowing red scratches on the surroundings for about five seconds in order to pursue his victims. Wounded victims leave traces of blood that the killer can also see, and they also make a whimpering sound that the killer can hear.

In addition to their unique skills, the killers also have a level system similar to that of the survivors. Add-ons do not improve the found objects, as with the survivors, but the unique ability of the killer. Offerings and perks are similar to those of the victims. To unlock the add-ons, perks and offerings, so-called blood points are required, which can be collected through various actions in the game. Such actions are e.g. B. Finding, hunting, hitting or sacrificing survivors.

The game has 20 different killers (as of May 20, 2020), each with an individual ability. With the exception of this one skill, the other skills of the killers are identical.

List and skills of each killer

killer English name ability Publication date
The trapper Trapper The trapper has the ability to collect and place bear traps in order to wound the survivors. The wound caused by the bear trap can usually be compared with a successful hit by the killer and can be increased or influenced by unlockable add-ons. If the trapper has been selected as the killer, closed bear traps are distributed in the game world, which the killer can collect and set up in other places in order to hold a survivor there if he activates the trap by walking over it. The survivor can either try to free himself, be freed by another survivor or can be caught by the killer and possibly sacrificed on a hook. A survivor can also defuse a trap that has not yet been triggered. The killer also gets a visualization of the source of the noise if one of the bear traps was triggered or defused by a survivor. The trapper can only carry one trap at a time, at the beginning of the round he already carries one. The trapper can also set their own traps, which will stop them briefly, bend down, and open the trap so that it can be set again. If he carries a survivor, he is dropped and can flee. The noises when triggering and disarming a trap can be heard throughout the game world, but not the noises when setting it up. June 14, 2016
The ghost Wraith The spirit has the ability to make itself almost invisible in order to camouflage itself from the gaze of the survivors. In this state, the killer cannot attack, but can interact with the game world in other ways by destroying generators or searching closets, but he also generates points by simply observing the survivors and their situation. While the killer remains in the state of almost complete invisibility, the survivors can no longer hear the warning heartbeat and the music that can be heard with the other killers if they are in the vicinity of the survivor. Even if the mind is invisible, it still makes breathing noises which can be heard. Camouflaging and unmasking is signaled acoustically by a bell ringing, which can be heard throughout the game world. In the invisible state, the killer can be recognized by a distortion effect at its position, which is more noticeable with increasing ambient brightness. At the beginning of the round, the ghost is already camouflaged. June 14, 2016
The hillbilly Hillbilly The hillbilly carries a chainsaw with which he can carry out the so-called chainsaw sprint after a short charging time . During the chainsaw sprint, the killer runs at increased speed in one direction and is difficult to control until the end of the sprint, which makes a successful attack with the chainsaw difficult. The sprint can also be used to remove obstacles a little faster and in a more controlled manner. Survivors are immediately thrown to the ground if the chainsaw hits successfully during the chainsaw sprint instead of being wounded first. A successful hit with the chainsaw causes double the damage of a hit with the hillbilly's hammer, whose function is identical to the main weapons of the other killers. When charging and performing the chainsaw sprint, the loud chain saw noise can be heard throughout the game world. June 14, 2016
The nurse Nurse The nurse has the option of teleporting quickly for a short time, also through objects (e.g. walls, generators or survivors). After the teleport, the nurse can only move very slowly for a brief moment. During this time, the field of vision is restricted. With a teleport, the nurse moves faster than normal, which is why a teleport can also be useful over open terrain. During the teleport the nurse can hit, a teleport through a survivor only wounds him if he hits at the same time. When teleporting, the nurse utters a scream that can be heard throughout the game world. 18th August 2016
The converter Shape The converter has a three level ability called Diabolic. During the first stage, the survivor will only hear the heartbeat when the survivor is standing next to the transducer. The converter moves more slowly than normal during the first stage, but becomes faster when the second stage is reached, and the terror radius also increases. In the third stage, the converter becomes even faster and can knock a survivor to the ground with one hit, the terror radius now corresponds to that of the other killers. After a minute, the level is reset to two. The converter increases the level by stalking (English for "observation") of survivors, with each increase in a certain melody that all survivors hear. The model for the converter is Michael Myers, known from the Halloween film series . October 25, 2016
The witch Hag The witch can draw up to ten phantom traps on the floor. A trap is triggered by a survivor walking or running over it. (A stealthy survivor does not set the trap.) When a trap is set, an illusion of the witch appears directly in front of him and the heartbeat sets in, while the witch herself is shown the location of the triggered trap. This can either make use of the distraction of the survivors by the illusion to attack them from an ambush, or, if it is within a radius of less than 40 meters around the triggered trap, teleport immediately to their position. After a few seconds the illusion the survivor sees disappears. The phantom traps can be destroyed using a flashlight. Once the witch has placed all ten traps, no further traps can be placed until another trap has been triggered or destroyed. Their unique perks are also influenced by totems scattered across each map. Survivors can destroy these to deactivate the perks for the corresponding round and thus weaken the killer. December 8, 2016
The doctor Doctor The doctor can hit the survivors with his main attack weapon or perform "shock therapy" with electric shocks. Switching the attack mode between hitting and shocking happens in a few seconds. The electric shocks shock all survivors who are within the killer's terror radius. The closer the doctor is to the survivor, the stronger the shock. At the beginning, all survivors have shock level 0. A shock increases the level up to III. Every time the level is increased, the survivors scream loudly. In Levels II and III, the survivor sees the doctor's illusions appearing irregularly in his environment. In level III, the survivor screams at irregular intervals like a level increase. The doctor can see the source of the sound and the position of the doctor illusions, the survivors can only hear the screams. A Survivor in Shock Level III can calm down, thereby returning to Level II, but the calming process lasts, must be continuous, and the Survivor is incapable of acting during the calming process. May 11, 2017
The hunter Huntress The slayer has the ability to use throwable axes. It has five axes as standard, which can be stocked in cupboards. If an ax is hit successfully it counts as a normal hit from the killer with no other improvement. The amount, strength and effects of the axes can vary due to the improvements mentioned. July 27, 2017
The pig Pig The pig has the ability to crouch and not have a terror radius while doing so. If the pig is crouching, it is possible for it to launch an ambush attack and storm off. If a survivor gets "death status", the pig can set an inverted bear trap on the survivor's head. Reverse bear traps activate a timer when a generator is repaired. If the trap trips after the timer has expired, the survivor is automatically sacrificed. Survivors can get rid of inverted bear traps by searching jigsaw boxes found on the map for the correct key. The Pig is a licensed killer from the film Saw . September 14, 2017
The nightmare Nightmare The nightmare has the ability to draw the survivors into its dream world and thereby make them vulnerable. Outside of his dream world, they cannot be hurt by him and he is invisible to them. But even in the invisible state it can be perceived by the laughter of children. When survivors who are in the dream world are outside the terror radius of the "nightmare", he can see their auras. If the survivor is in the dream world, he can be "awakened" back to the real world by a failed skill check, or he is looking for another survivor who can wake him up. The "nightmare" is called Freddy Krueger and is a fictional serial killer from the movie Nightmare on Elm Street . October 26, 2017
The cannibal Cannibal The cannibal has the ability to use a chainsaw (similar to the hillbilly's) to induce a deadly bloodlust and strike anyone down instantly. He can hit multiple targets with one charge of the chainsaw. However, its main weapon is a sledgehammer. Furthermore, the cannibal is one of three killers who can put a survivor into death status immediately, without perks or add-ons. It is based on Leatherface from the 1974 film Blood Court in Texas . 23rd January 2018
The clown clown The clown has the ability to throw poison bottles at survivors. These form a poison cloud where they land, slowing down the survivors crossing them and restricting their view. The clown can throw four poison bottles, after which he has to recharge them. His weapon is a butterfly knife. June 12, 2018
The ghost Spirit The ghost is a Japanese killer who was murdered with a katana . It has the ability to briefly move invisibly through the map, whereby an illusion remains in place and disappears as soon as it reappears. While using her ability, the ghost cannot see any survivors, but can see the scratch marks left behind. Your weapon is a katana.

It is based on a Japanese onryo .

18th September 2018
The Legion legion The Legion consists of four different Canadian killers who can move in sprint mode with the help of their "Wild Frenzy" strength. In sprint mode, she cannot destroy pallets, but slides over the pallet like a survivor. Your weapon is a hunting knife. December 11, 2018
The plague The Plague The Plague is the oldest DLC killer in the game. It is based on the Black Death . Their ability is to spread the plague and thus infect survivors. If the plague hits a survivor, everything he touches will also be infected (generators, pallets, ...). However, the survivor can use a well to rid themselves of the infection. The epidemic can also visit the well used and strengthen its infection. 19th March 2019
Ghost face The Ghost Face Ghost Face, like the Changer, has the ability to stalk survivors. However, it differs from the transducer in that it can move into a creeping position, which makes it more difficult for the survivors to locate it. Furthermore, Ghost Face has the option to lean around corners and stalk survivors without losing movement speed. If Ghost Face has stalked a survivor for a certain period of time, he can knock him to the ground for 40 seconds with just one hit. In contrast to the converter, Ghost Face has individual progress bars for each survivor. 18th June 2019
The demogorgon The Demogorgon The Demogorgon can create and use portals to quickly cover distances. With his Abyssal strength , he can spot survivors near a tunnel exit and injure them with a jump attack. His weapon is his claw. This is a character from the Stranger Things series . 17th September 2019
The oni The Oni The oni is based on Japanese mythology . He collects the blood of injured survivors to activate his so-called "Blood Fury". There he has two other skills. Your first skill is the "Demon Dash". He can move with it at an enormous speed, but it is difficult to steer the curves. The second ability is the "Demon Strike". He has a mace with which he can send several survivors straight to the ground at the same time. However, the mace has a long “charge” time, which makes it harder to hit the survivors. 3rd December 2019
The messenger of the dead The Deathslinger The messenger of death has a one-shot firearm that he can reload over and over again. This firearm shoots an arrow with a hook that the messenger of death can use to pull survivors towards him. Survivors can try to get rid of it while hanging on the arrow. If the survivor manages to free himself, the messenger of death is stunned for three seconds and the survivor is given the status effect “deep wound”. However, if the messenger of death uses his basic attack before the survivor can break free, the killer will not be stunned and the survivor will not lose any health. March 10, 2020
The executioner Pymarid Head The hangman can lay a path with his big knife. When survivors walk through this, their position will be revealed to the executioner (similar to the Legion) and he can send dying survivors who have walked through the path into a "penance cage", which works like a hook. In addition, the executioner has the ability to make a wave with his knife, survivors hit will be injured by the wave. July 16, 2020

The archive

The archive is a new mode in Dead by Daylight, which was announced by the developers for the 3 year stream and was released with the patch 3.3.1. The archive offers challenges and a collection .

Challenges

The challenges offer many new opportunities for survivors and killers. Completing a normal challenge will earn you three Fissure Fragments and 15,000 Blood Points. An example of a normal challenge would be "Fix a total of two generators". But there are also separate challenges that must be completed in a single round. After completing a few challenges, you come to a master challenge. This can be particularly difficult or require special perks with which it must be completed. Completing a Master Challenge will give you five Fissure Fragments and 25,000 Blood Points. You also get another entry for the collection.

The collection

The collection is another addition, whereby background information on characters or other stories can be unlocked. For a complete story, additional memories or logs are required, which can be unlocked through the master challenges.

The gap

The Rift is a Battle Pass for Dead by Daylight. It came out together with the archive with patch 3.3.1. No game advantages can be unlocked through the gap. Currencies (pus serum and aura cells), lucky charms and other skins can be unlocked. You don't have to buy anything to unlock items, but you can unlock the Premium Pass for 1,000 aura cells (equivalent to 10 euros) and unlock significantly more items. To move up levels, you have to earn experience points or complete challenges. Ten fission fragments are required for a further stage . A level-up gives one Fissure Fragment, a Normal Challenge three, and Master Challenges five Fissure Fragments.

Downloadable content

Behavior Interactive has released a total of 24 individual DLCs by 2020. A new DLC is released every three months on average. Since the release of the clown, a public test version (PTB) has been released before each new DLC, which the game's developers can use to get community feedback on the most important upcoming changes. The estimated time span between the opening of the PTB and the publication of a new DLC is approximately 2-3 weeks, and the DLC is usually published a few days after the PTB has been shut down.

9 of the 24 DLCs currently released contain licensed killers and survivors from popular horror franchises and other video games. A DLC can be bought both in Steam and in-game with a game-specific currency. Some chapters can therefore also be played for free. Each new chapter has its own trailer and a so-called "spotlight" in which the chapter is presented.
