Fire Emblem Heroes is a computer game that belongs to the genre of strategy role-playing games . It was developed by the Nintendo Studio Intelligent Systems and was released on February 2, 2017 for the iOS and Android operating systems . The game is an offshoot of the Fire Emblem series and contains a selection of characters from this series as well as a simplified gameplay.

Gameplay

Combat system

The combat system of Fire Emblem Heroes is similar to that of the main parts of the Fire Emblem series, but has been simplified.

All units have a weapon type and a movement type. A scissors, stone, paper system exists for the weapons sword, ax, lance and the corresponding books, stones, daggers and bows . Some weapons are excluded from this system. Staffs can heal their own units, but they can only attack with half the attack value. Daggers can weaken enemy units. Bows have an advantage over flying units. Dragons take less damage against ranged fighters. Beasts get bonuses when they don't have human neighbors.

With the movement types, infantry units can move two blocks. Cavalry units can move three blocks but not through forests. Flight units can move two blocks over any terrain. Armored units can only move one block, but have increased stats.

Most of the fights take place on a 6 × 8 field. You can use four of your own units to win against the opposing units.

units

The units are divided into different weapon and movement types, of which each unit has exactly one. Each unit has a level which can be increased by fighting opponents and healing. In addition, each unit has a star rating (from one star to five stars), which can be increased by a specific currency.

A unit has capabilities. These include the weapon, a support ability, the special attack and three other skills. Units can either know abilities from the start or inherit them from other units; the latter unit disappears. In addition, each unit can equip a seal, which enables another ability.

Two equal units of the same rating can be connected. One unit disappears, but the other receives increased values in return. The stats of a unit can be further increased by special, rare items.

Units can wear accessories that are only fashionable in nature.

Gacha

Fire Emblem Heroes is a gacha game . Units can thus be summoned using in-game currency, which can be bought with real money. Which unit is summoned depends on chance. Units with a low rating are more common than units with a high rating.

Units are summoned through focus banners. Each banner has several units here, which have an increased chance of appearing in high ratings. When new units are announced, they always appear first on a focus banner as focus. Some units cannot be obtained through the gacha mechanic, but are only available through events.

Modes

Fire Emblem Heroes has several modes that mostly work according to this combat system. To play some modes, energy is required, which generates itself after a while.

The main maps, in which the plot can be played through, and the exercise tower function according to the normal combat system. The main maps also include special missions such as the maneuvers, which are a kind of puzzle. There is also the series test, in which you have to deal with several cards in a row with a group of units, and the group attack, in which you are not allowed to use a unit more than once and have to complete several cards. Another mode is the hero trials, in which you tackle cards tailored to each individual character.

The arena duels are duels in which you fight against units from other players. In an arena attack you have to fight seven battles in a row, always with different units. Here you can win spheres, the currency for summoning new units.

The Aether Raids are another duel mode in which you have to defend your fortress and attack others. In these modes, all players are placed in a ranking, which is updated every week. In the Aether Resort you can build a settlement and interact with your units.

There are also special cards. In hero battles, units are obtained by fighting against them, and no unit of one's own may die. In turf battles you fight with units of players on the friend list on an 8 × 10 map against opposing units. There are also event cards for special events such as the anniversary, in which you can receive spheres.

Events

In Fire Emblem Heroes there are regular events in which you can receive in-game currencies, items and units. The events mostly vary from the normal combat system.

In the storm test you fight with several teams in several fights in a row against opposing units.

The typing fight is a music game in which you have to tap the screen to the beat.

In the election tournament you join the team of a unit. You fight with three units for your team and win points for your own team.

In the Great Conquest , three teams compete against each other to conquer an area. Together with other players you fight to get points for a part of the area in order to finally conquer it.

In the event forging ties , a story is told that contains newly added units. By winning fights, the story is told further.

action

Many characters and large parts of the game world from Fire Emblem Heroes are based on gods, characters, rivers and other locations in Norse mythology . The action of Fire Emblem Heroes takes place in the kingdom of Askr, which is at war against the neighboring Emblan Empire. The plot is divided into books, of which there are currently three.

Book I.

The Kingdom of Askr and the Emblan Empire are at war. Anna, the commander of the Guardians of Askr, the Askrian army, calls the player to Askr so that he can summon new heroes to Askr with the Breidablik weapon. Together with Alfonse, the prince of Askr, Sharena, the princess of Askr, and the summoned heroes they fight the Emblan army. The Emblan princess Veronica can bind heroes to her empire through a contract so that they fight for Embla.

In Book I, the Guardians travel through different worlds of the Fire Emblem universe to free the heroes from the contract. On their journey, the guards meet a mysterious man who turns out to be Bruno, Prince of Embla. Bruno previously impersonated a person named Zacharias and, as Zacharias, was a member of the guardians of Askr until one day he disappeared. It turns out that the Emblan royal family is cursed, which leads him to want to kill the Askrian royal family, which is why Bruno left the guards of Askr. He disappears one more time to look for a cure.

Book II

After Embla has been stopped for the time being, the Askr guards get into another conflict. The Ice Kingdom of Nifl and the Fire Kingdom of Múspell are at war. After Surtr, King of Múspell, destroys Nifl, Fjorm, a princess of Nifl, flees to Askr. The guardians of Askr fight against Múspell, who now also wants to conquer Askr.

After Surtr invades Askr, the Askr guards fight him. In doing so, they discover that Surtr cannot be injured, as he can only be killed by the ritual of frost. Gunnthrá, the eldest princess of Nifl, appears to the player in a dream and waits in Nifl for the guardians of Askr. Veronica has joined Surtr's army to destroy Askr. This army also includes Laevatein and Laegjarn, the princesses of Múspell, and Loki, the strategist Múspell. When the Askr Guardians reach Gunnthrá, Surtr Gunnthrá burns. After the guardians of Askr flee, Fjorm performs the ritual of frost. Surtr wants to sacrifice Veronica to perform the ritual of the flames that would make him immortal. On the way to Múspell, the guards of Askr fight against Helbindi, a general in Múspell's army, defeat him and free Ylgr, the youngest princess of Nifl. When they arrive at Surtr's castle, he has already started the ritual of the flames. The guardians of Askr flee and find Hríd, the prince of Nifl, who learned from Zacharias how to stop the ritual of the flames. Ylgr turns out to be Loki in disguise, and the guards of Askr defeat her. Loki then disappears. Veronica and the real Ylgr are now to be sacrificed. On the way to stop the ritual, the guards fight and defeat Laegjarn, who sacrifices himself to the flame of Múspell and burns himself in the process. Surtr sacrifices Helbindi's sister. Helbindi saves Ylgr and Veronica and is therefore killed by Surtr. The Askr Guardians stop Laevatein from sacrificing themselves, stopping the ritual of the flames and allowing them to kill Surtr. Fjorm, weakened by the ritual of frost, wants to spend her last days in Askr.

Book III

After Múspell is defeated, Askr is attacked by Hel, the realm of the dead. The army of the dead includes Líf, first king of Askr, and Thrasir, first ruler of Embla. Hel, ruler of the realm of the same name, instructs her daughter Eir to join Askr in order to betray her later.

After Eir joins Askr, Hel invades Askr. In Embla, Loki appears in front of Veronica and tells her that Hel wants to subjugate all kingdoms and thus Embla as well. When the guardians of Askr fight the troops from Hel, Hel appears and curses Alfonse, so that he will die nine days later. Alfonses father Gustav says that he fought against Hel himself. Eir says it is impossible to escape her mother's curse. After nine days, Hel appears when Alfonse and the Askr guards fight more troops from Hel. Instead of Alfonse, Gustav sacrifices himself and Hel kills him because Gustav's royal blood is sufficient for her. After Gustav's death, the Askr guards fight more soldiers from Hel. Among them is Gustav, who is controlled by Hel. When the guards of Askr enter Hel, Hel appears in front of Alfonse and puts her curse on him again. Alfonse says that he has nine days to find Hel's weak point and to defeat it when she appears in front of Alfonse to kill him. Hel therefore takes back her curse. Eir admits that, in contrast to Hel himself, he is mortal, but that he has had several lives, which Hel took from her except for her last. The guards of Askr enter an alternative version of Askr through a portal, in which everything seems to have died.

Book III will continue with updates in the coming months.

development

In 2015, Nintendo announced the collaboration with the mobile company DeNA on several smartphone titles. In April 2016, Fire Emblem Heroes was announced for mobile along with Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp . During Fire Emblem Direct on January 18, 2017, Fire Emblem Heroes was announced for February 2, 2017. On February 2, 2017, the game was released for mobile devices in several countries. A Feh Channel - similar to a Nintendo Direct - announces game news such as new modes or changes to the game every few months.

Choose your legends

In January 2017, a few days before Fire Emblem Heroes was released , Intelligent Systems hosted the “Choose Your Legends” campaign. Players could vote from all Fire Emblem characters, of which the four most popular characters, two male and two female, are released in special costumes. In the first action, Lucina was chosen as runner-up in the female division and Lyn as the winner. In the male division, Roy was chosen as runner-up and Ike from Path of Radiance as the winner. In August 2017, the special versions of these characters were released and all players received a version for free.

The campaign was held again in January 2018. Veronica won second place, Celica won, Ephraim came second and Hector won. Special versions of these characters were also released in August 2018, one version of which was given to all players for free.

The third round of the action was held in January 2019. Camilla came second, Micaiah won, Eliwood came second and Alm won. These characters will be released as special versions at a later date.

In January 2020, the campaign was held for the fourth time. In the female division, Lysithea was chosen as runner-up and Edelgard as the winner. In the male division, Claude was chosen as runner-up and Dimitri as the winner. These characters will be released as special versions at a later date.

Fire Emblem: Lost Heroes

reception

Meta-ratings
Database Rating
Metacritic 72 of 100
reviews
publication Rating
IGN 7.4 out of 10

Fire Emblem Heroes received generally mixed to positive reviews after its release. On Metacritic - based on 36 reviews - it received a rating of 72% and a user rating of 7.5 out of 10.

IGN's Meghan Sullivan rated Fire Emblem Heroes 7.4 out of 10 as good. It is a shame that several mechanics of the main series have been left out, but the scissors, stone, paper principle has been incorporated well. The gacha system is fair, but the prices for the game currency are a bit too high. The plot does not bring any special ideas, but the game is worthwhile due to the number of characters.

Awards

Fire Emblem Heroes has been nominated in video game awards, some of which it has won.

Award ceremony category result date
Google Play Japan Award Best of 2017 Won 05th December 2017
The Game Awards 2017 Best Mobile Game Nominated 07th December 2017

Suspension of the game in Belgium

On May 21, 2019, Nintendo announced that the service to download and play Fire Emblem Heroes and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp would be discontinued in Belgium on August 27, 2019. The reason for the discontinuation of the game are new Belgian laws regarding loot boxes , such as Fire Emblem Heroes uses them in the form of a gacha system when summoning heroes. Nintendo will no longer publish any more games with similar payment systems in Belgium.
