Fire Emblem Warriors is a hack-and-Slay video game, which by Omega Force and Team Ninja in collaboration with Intelligent Systems develops and Koei Tecmo in Japan and Nintendo in the remaining areas for the Nintendo switch and the New Nintendo 3DS was released . It was released in Japan on September 28, 2017, while in the rest of the regions it was released on October 20, 2017. The game is a crossover with gameplay from the Dynasty Warriors series and characters from various games from the Fire Emblem series.

Gameplay

The game is a crossover of the Dynasty Warriors series and the Fire Emblem series. Fire Emblem Warriors has the hack-and-slay gameplay of the Dynasty Warriors series and characters from games of the Fire Emblem series, but also several mechanics that occur in the Fire Emblem series. In addition to the levels of difficulty "Easy", "Normal" and "Hard", there are also the game modes "Classic" and "Beginner". In Classic Mode, as in the Fire Emblem franchise, characters are no longer available when they die. In addition, the weapons have the weapon triangle mechanics of the Fire Emblem series. You can also combine two characters together, which strengthens the other character. When two characters fight or interact together, their sympathy for each other increases. If there is a high level of sympathy, support talks are activated for some character combinations in which they speak to one another.

The game modes in Fire Emblem Warriors that are fought in are Story Mode and Historical Mode. In story mode you play through the plot in different scenarios and unlock characters. In the historical mode you play scenarios from games of the Fire Emblem series in several battles and can unlock weapons, items and other characters. Characters and weapons can be reinforced in the camp. By using amiibo you can get additional materials, weapons and money.

There is also a co-op mode for two players. In this two players can play the battles of the story mode and the historical mode. This is possible through a horizontal split screen .

action

Fire Emblem Warriors is set in the Kingdom of Aytolis. One day monsters invade the kingdom while royal twins Rowan and Lianna train with their friend Darios, prince of the neighboring kingdom of Gristonne. On the run, the twins and Darios are separated from Yelena, Queen Aytolis'. This gives them the flame seal (or "Fire Emblem") before monsters overtake them. The flame seal can give great power with five pyroxene stones. In search of the stones, the twins come into conflict with the characters from Fire Emblem: Awakening , Fire Emblem Fates and Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon , whose protagonists own the stones. After the flame seal was restored, it turns out that Darios' father Oskar wants to revive the chaos dragon Velezark and wants to use Yelena's blood for it. Velezark attacks Darios, who steals the flame seal because of it. The twins save Yelena, Darios kills Oskar instead and Velezark is revived. Darios is able to free himself from Velezark's spell, gives the twins the flame seal and is killed by Velezark. The twins defeat Velezark and the heroes return to their original worlds.

development

Fire Emblem Warriors was developed by Omega Force and Team Ninja in collaboration with Intelligent Systems. The studios Omega Force and Team Ninja have previously developed Hyrule Warriors , a crossover of the Dynasty Warriors series and the The Legend of Zelda series . The producer Yosuke Hayashi and Director Hiroya Usuda were important managers in the development of the game.

During the development of Hyrule Warriors Legends and the introduction of certain strategic elements into the game, the first ideas for adding more of these elements came up. After the weapon triangle of the Fire Emblem series, Hayashi created a first concept for Fire Emblem Warriors . He presented this to Nintendo after Nintendo asked about a cooperation with Koei Tecmo for the Nintendo Switch. After Nintendo approved the concept, the first development of the game began.

Although Omega Force and Team Ninja developed the game, Nintendo and Intelligent Systems monitored the development, especially during dialogues and support discussions between the characters. It was originally planned to write a conversation for each character combination, but this could not be managed due to the large number of characters, so that only certain characters have these conversations with each other.

To allow for a wider variety of weapons and classes, Hayashi decided to only include characters from a limited number of Fire Emblem games in Fire Emblem Warriors . It was decided to focus on the three games Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, Fire Emblem: Awakening and Fire Emblem Fates.

The visual style of the game is based more on the cut scenes of the Fire Emblem series than on the style of previous Warriors games like Hyrule Warriors. The cutscenes meant that the original plan to have a self-adaptable protagonist had to be discarded. Instead, the twins Rowan and Lianna were chosen. In the beginning, they had a design that consisted of gold, white and blue colors. When Hayashi and Usuda presented the designs to Intelligent Systems, it was found that the colors of Rowan and Lianna were too similar to those of the protagonists of the then-unannounced game Fire Emblem Heroes . Therefore, the design of Rowan and Lianna changed one more time.

During Gamescom 2017, a limited edition for the game, which contains the soundtrack and character cards, was announced and the release date for Europe was set for October 20, 2017. Fire Emblem Warriors finally released on September 28, 2017 in Japan and on October 20 in the rest of the world. While the game was published by Koei Tecmo in Japan, it was published by Nintendo in the rest of the regions.

Both IGN's Meghan Sullivan and GameSpot's Jeremy Winslow praised Fire Emblem Warriors for portraying the warrior fantasy well and defeating thousands of opponents would make the player seem heroic. GameSpot's Winslow liked how the game put characters from the Fire Emblem series in a new light, but criticized the fact that many popular characters were not featured in the game.

IGN's Sullivan liked the mechanics of the Fire Emblem franchise, especially the combination of two characters and the weapon triangle, as these would make the gameplay more tactical. Polygon’s Janine Hawkins also praised the incorporation of strategic elements, such as weapon forging, into adding new capabilities. GameSpot's Winslow, on the other hand, found that the mechanics did not make the game any different to other Dynasty Warriors games, which disappointed.

Polygon's Hawkins complained that the plot was not special and that it only served as a means to an end to involve the Fire Emblem characters. Hawkins also criticized that the plot of Fire Emblem Warriors is too similar to that of other Warriors games such as Dragon Quest Heroes 2. Nevertheless, the battles give the plot a replay value.

GameSpot's Winslow criticized problems that would arise due to the many characters on the screen, so that the frame rate in particular suffered. Polygon's Hawkins also criticized the frame rate, noting that the performance mode only improved frame rate at the expense of image resolution . The frame rate in multiplayer mode is also bad, even in smaller battles. Damien McFerran from Nintendo Life, on the other hand, welcomed the option of being able to choose between frame rate and image resolution, but also criticized the image quality of the multiplayer mode.

McFerran from Nintendo Life praised the New Nintendo 3DS version for the fact that the game content was the same as the Nintendo Switch version, but criticized the lack of multiplayer mode. McFerran praised the fact that the frame rate remained stable, but criticized the fact that the poorer performance of the New Nintendo 3DS meant that many details were missing in the character models and textures.

Sales figures

In its first week of sales, the Nintendo Switch version of Fire Emblem Warriors sold 41,191 times in Japan. The New Nintendo 3DS version was sold 18,537 times in Japan during the same period.

In addition, on April 26, 2018, Koei Tecmo announced that they were very satisfied with the sales figures. The sold Nintendo Switch and New Nintendo 3DS versions combined would have reached more than 1,000,000 units.
