Nintendo Direct are from the Japanese video game company Nintendo produced video presentations where information about the content or franchises of the company are presented, especially new information about video games and game consoles . A direct is broadcast in real time (“ live ”) on the official Nintendo website or via various video portals such as YouTube or Twitch . They appear at irregular intervals and are usually announced about a week before they are broadcast.

In November 2012, Satoru Iwata announced that the Nintendo Direct presentations would be seen by an average of 600,000 viewers up to a million viewers. More recent editions of Nintendo Direct are seen by millions of viewers on YouTube alone.

In addition to the general Nintendo Direct presentations that cover a range of titles, there are also editions that focus on specific titles or series. These are usually presented by the producer or director of the game or series or use a narrator. Particularly short editions are published under the name Nintendo Direct Mini . In addition, Nintendo publishes special editions of Nintendo Direct at E3 , one of the most important international games fairs, which are usually longer than the usual editions.

History and regional differences

The first Nintendo Direct aired exclusively in Japan and North America on October 21, 2011. The editions were later published in Europe, Australia and South Korea. Presentations are made on a large scale in both international and regional formats, with moderators varying by region and language. Until his death in 2015, Nintendo Directs were mostly presented worldwide by Nintendo's President Satoru Iwata . He told the story in Japanese for the Japanese area and in English for the other regions. After Iwata's death, the format briefly did not receive a global presenter until Yoshiaki Koizumi from Nintendo EPD took over this role. These presentations included a new "headline" format for announcements, with this section being narrated by a secondary presenter in Japanese (in Japan) or English (elsewhere). On Nintendo Directs' North American broadcasts, Koizumi's role is also translated into English. In Europe, Australia and South Korea, subtitles are used to translate Koizumi's role and, if necessary, the English speaker.

In North America, the videos are often presented by the President of Nintendo of America, Reggie Fils-Aimé, and Bill Trinen. European editions will be presented by the President of Nintendo of Europe, Satoru Shibata , with these presentations also being broadcast in Australia. South Korea also broadcasts its own Nintendo Directs, moderated by the President of Nintendo of Korea, Hiroyuki Fukuda. Although the European edition is usually broadcast in Australia, on September 24, 2014, a Nintendo Direct hosted by Tom Enoki was broadcast exclusively in Australia for the first and only time. Nintendo Directs are often broadcast and localized in multiple regions internationally at the same time.
